There was a question earlier about what breakthroughs have come from Stem Cell Research.
It got the usual Religious Right" bashing.
One guy CK4829 posted a link. "Woman walks after 20 years paralyzed, due to Stem Cell Treatment".
So I went to the link http://www.redorbit.com/news/display/?id.

Surprised to find it was thru the use of UMBILICAL CORD Stem Cells!!!!! NO FETUS USED.
They go on to say most if not all treatments have come from adult stem cells, or Umbilical Cord.

So why do we need to use Fetus, when the other options work better?????

Sorry, misused the word Fetus. Should have been Embryo...

We need to use all the options we can...these fetuses they are talking about using are currently being thrown away. People are going to get abortions regardless, why not try to get something positive out of it?

They don't use fetuses...they use embryos...there is a big difference between the two.

The truth of the matter is that with embryos they have special cells which have a less chance at rejection than an older fetus or adult stem cells do, while still being totally flexible about the cells they can change into. The facts stand that is it morally ignorant to let people unable to walk and be repaired or to totally destroy the embryo so it can not help anyone? The embryo is already slated to be destroyed or will they use it to help people live?

That same article says we have a long way to go. Also, who do you think is hooked to that umbilical chord? Thats right a baby...so a fetus IS needed...just not a dead one. Anyhow, ALL of that research was created out of an intial research grant using embryonic stem cells...why did it take 10 years later (in another country, BTW) to get this far? Because the religious right has worked trilessly to gag ANY research using stem cells...because they themselves didn;t realize there was difference..heck, they didn;t even relaize that they weren't abortions! They were fetuses discarded at a fertillity clinic, much like the one the Bush's used to conceive thier twins. i wonder how many fetuses they threw out, after they got the twins?

People are misinformed about embryonic stem cell research. They are not a fetus. The have never been inside a mother, they are not from abortions. What crackpot website is publishing that? If any? A religious one? I understand that simple-minded people don't understand the biology too well since many of them have ignored science their entire lives but here is what embryonic stem cell research is in case they feel like learning something today:

Embryonic stem cells, as their name suggests, are derived from embryos. Specifically, embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro—in an in vitro fertilization clinic—and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. They are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman's body. The embryos from which human embryonic stem cells are derived are typically four or five days old and are a hollow microscopic ball of cells called the blastocyst. The blastocyst includes three structures: the trophoblast, which is the layer of cells that surrounds the blastocyst; the blastocoel, which is the hollow cavity inside the blastocyst; and the inner cell mass, which is a group of approximately 30 cells at one end of the blastocoel.

ok first i think of that persons are fake effect the assumption technique in the back of the question. i think of it replaced into meant as greater of a if somebody is already going to have an abortion why not use the fetus then not that we'd desire to constantly have abortions purely for that. in my opinion i'm against abortions in all yet 2 situations and those are rape or demise to the two the mum and the toddler if the being pregnant maintains. And so i in my opinion as southern baptist think of that if we've already taken one life we'd desire to constantly use the stem cells to make sure if we are in a position to save somebody else. God would not have given us the understanding to do stuff like this if he didnt elect us to aim and save those with it.

Adult stem cells such as blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow (called hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs) are currently the only type of stem cell commonly used to treat human diseases. Doctors have been transferring HSCs in bone marrow transplants for over 40 years. More advanced techniques of collecting, or "harvesting", HSCs are now used in order to treat leukemia, lymphoma and several inherited blood disorders.

The clinical potential of adult stem cells has also been demonstrated in the treatment of other human diseases that include diabetes and advanced kidney cancer. However, these newer uses have involved studies with a very limited number of patients.

Human embryonic stem cells are thought to have much greater developmental potential than adult stem cells. This means that embryonic stem cells may be pluripotent—that is, able to give rise to cells found in all tissues of the embryo except for germ cells rather than being merely multipotent—restricted to specific subpopulations of cell types, as adult stem cells are thought to be.

The unique quality of fetal stem cells is that they're 'pluripotent' - they can become any cell in the body. Other stem cells cannot. This makes them ideal for research.

That well-funded second-best alternatives are getting results, while the most promising form of research languishes is a result of foolish policy decisions.

That is the jest of what the President said, he said that science needs to concentrate on other avenues. Stem cell research is great, but don't get so caught up in it that they start going through the dumpsters at abortion clinics for it.

I don't follow this stuff that closely, but that's what I've been hearing. All the breakthrus I've heard of are not using embryonic or fetal stem cells, but other stem cells.

Stem cell research is great. We just dont want embronic stem cells used. There have been "0" breaktroughs with fetus stem cells. 100% of the cures have come from Adult stem cells or as you have said placenta cells.

The greatest scientific breakthrough of our life time occurred with little fanfare. We have mapped the human genome. Any and all human physical conditions can be manipulated when you use the right combinations. I don't understand why more researchers aren't going down this road.
