Just ordered and extra 512mb of RAM for my computer. I'm sure I have the right chip after consulting an in-store technician and my computer's website. When I add the RAM and boot the computer everything is normal and the start screen for XP is loaded. I receive a stop error (blue screen) when I attempt to log onto my user. I remove the RAM and everything is fine. Is the hardware malfunctioning or am I supposed to do something to install it?

If you are sure the RAM is ok you might want to check the slot. Easiest way is to have them swap the ram and see if it does it again. if it does it again and you are certain it is right then the slot is bad on the board.

Also you can try moving the ram you already have into that spot and see if it will boot up. or you can also use the new stikc in the same spot as the current memory and see if it boots. If new memory boots the machine in the slot the old memory was in then you know the second slot may be bad. if it doesn't then you know the new memory is bad or wrong.

If your computer has a big battery watch (circle form) take it off for 1 hour and then go buy another one but NEW. Replace it then turn on your computerand it will work again. I use to have this problem Trust me rams can work on any computer.

It is either the RAM stick itself or it also could be the slot on the motherboard is bad. Try the new RAM in another slot...if it's still not working, it is bad RAM.
