but one of my best friend's mother just passed away this morning. And although I've been through this many times myself with losing loved ones, I seem to never feel like I have the right words to say to someone who is going through it now. Any suggestions?

Don't worry about what you need to say. Use your eyes as a guide and your heart as your voice. She will understand.

Same here. I just add a few of the things that are always said and offer silent support. I am there if they need me will always listen and give a shoulder to cry on(tear stains wanted). I feel is this the best thing I can do. I am sorry for your friend's loss and anything you might be going through.

All you can do is be there for your friend. Sometimes just being there is enough. I have been there myself on both sides. I dont usually know what to say either. What helped me the most is having friends just be there with me. Then in a few days take her out to do something fun and try to get her mind off of it.

Give her a hug and tell her you are there if she needs you and don't just say it really be there but still give her some space...let her know that we were not here to make this our eternal home tell her her mom was a good woman so she is in heaven away from this world...make her smile this might take some time

A shoulder to lean on and your presence will be good enough ... if words don't come out naturally, then it's probably best to just keep quiet till the time comes to speak.
Perhaps a brief, meaningful sentence would do, such as,
" I'm trully sorry, my deepest condolences go out to you and your family... I don't know what else to say, but you know I will be here for you, always." ...
Good luck with that, take care ......

i have lost many loved ones myself, starting when i was 12 and my mother died. when i lose a loved one, i know what makes me feel better is when my friends were just "there". they didn't have to come up with some magical word, just a hug and a smile and stayed by myside.

Oh, so sad. I'm sorry for your friend. Everything you say sounds so cheesy right? But it's just a gesture and your friend knows you'll be there for them. Offer your sympathy (or empathy by the sounds of it), tell them they can call on you for anything and encourage them to keep on keeping on.

There are no right words - life is not a script.

Genuinely say that you ae sorry it happened to your friend and be there to listen, hug, support them and let them grieve....

the one thing that made me feel better when my brother died was my best friend saying, if you want to talk, even if its at 4 am, i will pick up the phone.

its just nice to know that you can talk to someone if you need to.

There is no words really to say, all I usually say is "I am so sorry, if you need anything at all, call me" then make sure you call or stop by to check on them.
