My mom passed away when I was 15, so I've been working since then to fend for myself. I have an apartment by myself, so I need to work a full time job, therefore, I cannot go to school full-time, not to mention the fact that I'm not sure what classes to even take. I've been doing customer service and retail since I was old enough to work. I'm 25 now and make $30,000 a year doing customer service, which is pretty good for not having a college degree. The problem is, I have no idea what I like and what I want. I know for sure, I do NOT want to work in customer service. Having a long resume is not good, so I cannot job hop to find my nitch. How did everyone else find what they wanted to do. Any advice?

Do not use time as an excuse. I put myself through school while working full time all the way, Two degrees while I had children on top of that. Lots of people have no other choice if they want to get ahead. It absolutely sucked and was hard for sure, but pain is temporary.
Its simple, if you do not want to work in customer service then don't, employers expect people to job hop and it will not hinder you unless you are jumping jobs every 6 months. I think you can make a good chunk of cash in customer service, especially if you add a degree in organizational behavior or something of that nature.

I do not know if you ever find your nitch. From my own life experences. When you think you might find it life might check you. Like your mother's death. I just lost my mother four weeks ago. Was not expecting it. I lost a best friend nine years ago. I am thirty two now. Both those loses kick me in the teeth. I would say try not to use work for your nitch in life. Try and find something else. If there is soemthing you enjoy go with that stay away from the work thing. Try not to live to work. Say you get the dream job and some how that job is taken away. That might be life checking you. Good luck I hope I was a little help?

Can you go to school part time? Look at the courses offered, and pick something that sounds like it might be a career you're interested in, and sign up for an intro class. Talk to other people you meet there about the field - students, instructors, etc - and about their major.

Also, many colleges and universities offer career counseling. They may often have tests like the Myers-Briggs that will give you an idea of what jobs that people with similar temperaments or personalities do well in.

It's not easy working full-time and going to school part time, but if you want to do something besides what you're doing now, YOU'RE the one that has to make it happen. Good luck!

What do you like to do. Are you good at it. Try looking for a career/job that fit the interest of something you enjoy and are good at doing. Thats your nitch. For some people it takes longer than others.

Firstly I would like to say I have great addmiration for people like you who manage to overcome difficulties in their life and succeed which is what you have done.
You could try doing a course part time in something you like. Have you thought about teaching other people what you have learnt, or perhaps get into higher management.
Sometimes just looking through positions vacant will give you some ideas about what else you can do. You might see a job and think I have some of those qualities that I can transfer over if you find something that intrests you ring the company and talk to them you maybe surprised in what they are looking for. Sometimes they are looing for people who can bring a different perspective it can't hurt to ask.
Good luck with it.

I would suggest visiting a local community college and take an career assesment test. Then discuss with the career councilors options and interest. You can then follow a plan that will work with your schedule. Even if it is only one evening class at a time, you will feel good about the direction your taking. My first degree was a Associates of Liberal Arts, Just a 2 year degree in general education. Once you are in the system of learning and in the college environment you will start to be exposed to different studies that mat spark and interest. You can change majors anytime.

I don't think this will help you but I kind of drifted into what I wound up doing. Changed majors twice in college. One thing you could do is take the required courses like English Composition, language, etc and get those out of the way while you find out what you want to specialize in. Good luck.
