check your laptops battery, it showing charging? try using without plugged in, and check if the battery is draining real fast, could be your battery is about to die, or could be some software issues,
if software issue, try running the windows in safe mode, you can get safe mode by restarting your computer, hit the function key on ur keyboard F5, this will show a menu before it shows the windows logo, in there select
safemode with network connection (somthing like this)
select that and you will get into a desktop with a bigger screen resolution....and in four corners it shows safe mode(this usual)
and see if your computer shuts down ...if not then its a software issue, if it does it could be windows installation problem or hardware (possibly battery) issue

how old is it, and are you saying it shuts down straight away or is it after it has been in use for a while? If the laptop is a couple of years old and shuts down after a while, maybe it is over heating, older laptops have a tendency to overheat and shut down because the cooling fan gets clocked with dust after a while. If it's a newer laptop and/or it shuts down as soon as you open it, then maybe there is an issue with the switch, if you have a look around the edge of the lid of the laptop you will see a wee switch recessed into the edge, which turns off the screen when you close it, this maybe be faulty or jammed with something, or it could possibly be a setting in windows (I take it you are using windows), you can alter the way the switch works either via a setting in Windows or by using a utility that comes with the laptop. Hope this has been of some use, but either way if the machine was working OK and the it suddenly started doing this, then you know that either something has changed IE a setting or some such or that a fault has developed.

Multiple reasons it could do this.
Hardware problem that is causing the laptop to short out and shut down. This is more commonly a Motherboard/Battery issue which you will need to contact the manufacturer about.
Virus, It is possible that a virus for whatever reason could be shutting your machine down but most virus today would rather keep the machine up to do it dirty work which is rather counter productive for it's purposes.
Overheat. If the system is overheating there is a portion on the chip that detects overheat and will shut you machine down if it gets too hot. Most of the time it tries to lower the clock speed to reduce the heat. Easiest way to tell this is to open it up and see if the fans are moving or clean it out with a can of compressed air.

Does it turn on right away if you try? If not, you might be overheating (you could be overheating anyway). Blow some compressed air into the cpu fan (not too much as to break it) to blow out the dust that has built up (make sure the laptop is off and the battery is removed).

Could be overheating.
Opening the computer and cleaning the fan and the heat sync and also clean off and replacing the thermal gel on the cpu/heat sync will help.

It probably overheated. Were you maybe blocking the fan? Sometimes it helps to clean them out too.
