The answer is yes. It is probably due to environment at which these organisms exist, i.e. at the vents at the bottom of the ocean where no other like forms can exist and the only acceptable source of proton would be an inorganic one.

If you could reproduce it in a laboratory environment, then perhaps you could change it where they would be able to use something other than a inorganic source of proton, but I don't see that happening soon, and I don't see why anyone would be interested in seeing the results of that experiment anyway.
