by far the most common material engineered is steel. there is unlimited data out there for the various steels, so if all you have to do is the math and a presentation that is a good material.
the next question is what physical characteristic to report on. breaking point is critical in engineering. thermal expansion is another common one.
if you want to drift into new and unusual, titanium and aluminum are getting a lot of use in areonautics and space projects. there is still plenty of data out there.
really new is the field of ceramics. certain compositions are very strong and light making them useful as replacements for aluminum (and less often for steel). maybe you could do a strength and density comparison between metals and ceramics.

The most exciting work in materials research going on now is carbon nanotubes. They're trying to make them long enough and strong enough to build a space elevator.

For Electrical some are :silicone, copper, aluminum
Mechanical: steel
Civil: concrete, steel

I'm an EE major and therefore know a bit more about it, this certainly isn't everything.
