I don't know the size of your grandchild, so it's difficult to tell.

My best friend gave birth at 29 weeks to a 3.5 pound baby boy, and he is home and healthy, and everyone is happy.

You can expect baby to stay in the NICU until at least when s/he would have been 35 weeks, as this is standard. After the 35 week mark, if s/he is eating and has developed enough lungs, such that s/he can breathe on his/her own, even when in his/her carseat, s/he can then go home.

Don't worry - many, many babies are born this early and with today's medical science, the overwhelming majority survive. The hardest part is going to be waiting the next 7 weeks out in the NICU. Be supportive, it's hard to see your baby in an incubator for 7 weeks.

I did not but my sister in law did and today the baby is a happy healthy and smart 2 year old boy! Alot depends on where the babies strengths and weaknesses are but babies born at 28 weeks have a very good chance in this day and age.
