Not sure about the cheap part...but on used car lots you should look for something that has the best visibility thru the windows..the hardest part for a new driver is knowing where the car "corners" are [i.e., all 4 fenders!] when making turns or parking...also in traffic. And until you're absolutely sure she's mastered the car and its features, discourage her from using a cellphone while driving or taking all her friends with her for a ride. NO distractions until she's secure with the car and what it will do. Look at old Honda Accords...they're easy to drive, have nice big rear window [hatchback model] and are a dream to park.

I recommend a small SUV or small truck.
The main reason is visibility and accident safety.
As a new driver, there will be many things you need to adjust to.
One of them is that when driving, things happen *fast*. The more visibility you have, the more time you have to react, the more likely you will have in avoiding an accident.
Also, simple physics tells you that a small car will not absorb a crash impact as well as a larger vehicle. Even with airbags. Trees and poles don't care about the size of what hits them - they don't move. But a larger vehicle will absorb more of the impact - which means less of it will be transferred to you.
Whatever you do, make sure you are comfortable, have good foot pedal distance and safe steering wheel distance. You can upgrade to a cool car later. Safety first, please.

She shouldn't go small if she's a new driver. Get her an old 70's, boat of a car that eats a ton of gas. The old cars don't disinegrate in an accident. They really protect the driver. And, the insurance is cheap. Plus, if its a gas guzzler, you can rest assured that she won't be out joy riding. Don't let her read this, or she'll hate me.

Yes, cheap, what I refer to as a "a beater car". The driver not only has to get use to their own driving habits but the bad habits of others on the road. Chances of accidents are very high, thus the way high insurance premium.

good cars for new drivers honda civic, ford focus, chevy cobalt, but the best i feel yet is the toyota corrolla it doesnt look bad, and it is a nice comfy car, gets good gas mileage, and ours is like a tank.. it has been in soo many accidents- from forgien objects falling from the sky to alluminum ladders in the road to multiple rear ends to the one i did (im the new driver and i didnt do those lol) i got my tire off a country road with a drop off from the pavement and blew a tire causing me to lose control.. nearly flipping it, and it is just fine, tire fixed and all.. and even after all the stuff my parents have done to it in the years (and my one spill) it still looks just about as good as brand new.. it is a very good car and reasonable on the price

a ford escort. they are cheap, small and good on gas. and they dont make them anymore so it wont be a brand new car, but someone who is just learning to drive definately does not need a brand new car.
they are a dime a dozen, believe me you wont have a problem finding a cheap one of these for sale. but they are a decent car.
ps - everyone above that told you to get a foreign car, dont listen! they are always way more expensive and this is america!! (at least where i am living)

The Ford Taurus is a nice little starter car. It doesn't have much power, but it is good for a new driver.
