If you have your computer directly plugged into a phone jack, you'll probably have some type of dial up connection. You can use dial up service providers this way, but you won't be able to use a land line phone when you're online. It's also slower than a broadband connection, such as Verizon DSL. If you have DSL or Cable service for your Internet, you'd need a modem of some sort which would be connected to your computer with an Ethernet cable or via wi-fi.

This requires as DSL modem to be able to use DSL connectivity through People PC. Also requires that the phone company come out and setup the line for hte house to accept the DSL connection and also at the central office. DSl modems are used to convert the higher frequencies that DSL uses on phone lines into useable connectivity for a computer.

You can plug into any phone line and use a dialup service like PeoplePC or Netzero once you have signed up for it. But that is not DSL. You have to have a special "box" installed in your house that you connect to in order to get DSL Internet service. It does not come over a regualr phone line.
