Self-worship, what the ancient Hebrews called idolatry. This leads to an "I can do no worng" and "you ultimately don't matter" attitude. This mindset led to Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. They all had one thing in common - no God to worship. When that occurs, man worships himself, and the results are tragic.

I like the previous answer of "evil" by one of the responders, but I think it is too generic.
I do not like the multiple responses of "selfishness" or "greed" because it is not a horrible trait. Capatilism as an economic system would collapse if all parties were selfless (some may claim that would be a good thing, but I'm not sure). People need a "healthy" dose of desire (which could be seen by others as greed/selfishness).
In my opinion, the worst is apathy. A trait no one answering this question has because they took the time to put forth their belief. I would much rather argue with someone that is adamant about their beliefs and feelings on a topic than listen to someone say, "well, if you say so, I guess." Blind following and apathy lead to a mindless society and, for me, are the worst trait(s).

You guys have nailed it. It's selfishness. Just like unselfishness is the greatest trait in a person, selfishness is the worse. Selfishness encompasses all those other things like, Greed, Hate, Envy, Evil...all those things stem from one person thinking only of his/herself. All the world's crimes, all the world's evils stem from people thinking only of themselves. Selfishness is not only the worst possible trait in a person, but also the worst trait in life, because in this existence you need certain things to survive, and survival is the most basic instinct of all. So in order for you to survive, at times you must think about yourself.
Oh the dilemma.

Because I believe that change in necessary to grow and succeed in life, I would have to say that close-mindedness or a complete refusal to change (personally) would be the worst trait. A person who does not keep an open mind about his or her life as well as the obstacles they encounter may live a life with far more strife and struggle than necessary. Plus, change and personal growth is good because it nourishes the soul and helps us to live meaningful lives.

Those who desires war and violence are those whom I scorn. He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

Jealousy, Egoism and the Pursuit of Honor. These are the traits that rots a person out from within.

I know of many, many bad traits, but I think one of the worst for an individual is lack of appreciation for anything.
You see the bad effects in the person's interpersonal relationships, in the person's lack of personal growth, in the person's greed, in the person's badly thought out political philosophy (I'm thinking about radicals who hate everything about their own society).
Who would ever want to deal with the kind of person who can't appreciate???

Out of 20+ questions , I can't believe no one picked it - arrogance. The worst offense is when they are right. Totally infuriating! But what a delight when they are wrong!
