on the front of the router what does each light mean.
there's one that has like a tic what is this for?

You should visit NetGear's site, look up your specific model of router (which you haven't provided here), and find the online manual and look it up there.

Usually, these lights indicate power, whether a Cable or DSL connection is active, and also indicate whether each of the LAN ports is being used or not. The Cable/DSL and LAN leds will usually be flashing since they're indicating data is being transmitted / received.

I have a Sky Netgear one and the tick only comes on for a short time when you switch the router on to show it's started up OK. The light with the "i" shows you're connected to you DSL internet service (orange when it's not connected/connecting and green when it's connected), and the one next to that with the aerial shows your wireless is on. The lights numbered 1 to 4 only light up if there are computers plugged in with cables. The one on the far left is the power light.

Most likely there is one light for power, one light for "the router is connected to the internet", another for each of the ports in the back (probably 4 of them), and another for "activity/data is being transferred from the computer to/from the router".
