I believe Boggs wanted to be the first number retired by the Rays..... He had a better chance in Tampa than in Boston or New York.

They retired his number because he was the only player worthy enough that actually played for them. Ya he got his 3,000th hit with them but the real reason was so that the D-Rays aren't a good team and wanted to retire someones number.... anyones number
