the property of a system that allows it to do work?

Work is energy. The work equation is W = Fd; where F is a force acting on a mass to move it d distance. One might also argue power because power is W/dt, which is just work expended in some time interval dt.

devices that allow s us to multiply forces or change their directions are?

Machines are tools that allow us to alter forces. In fact, the other three answers provided are not even "devices." That should be a clear clue.

I hope these questions didn't come out of a textbook. They are ambiguous and not very insightful.

Energy, this is the fundamental use of work that is needed everywhere. Energy is transfered according to Law of conservation of Energy.

hmm.. I would say "joules". Joules are energy, right? When we multiply or add more energy, can we not change direction? The more energy gained gives us a new variety of directions and tasks that can be accomplished. :)
