My co-workers and I had been talking about Barry Bonds and got started about baseball records. One of my co-workers thought that the record for career home runs was 814, which obviously is wrong (755). For some reason though, the number 814 did stick out in my mind, as well as the minds of many of my other co-workers, as being a record for baseball. If anyone can explain why this number is important, or at least seems important, that would be great.

Babe Ruth hit 714, so maybe he was confused.

It also could be the amount Josh Gibson (supposedly) hit in the ***** Leagues.

Also, Sadaharu Oh hit 868 in the Japanese League.

Sounds to me like everyone is confusing Ruth's 714 with 814.

Josh Gibson is believed by many to have hit between 800 and 1,000 homers, but there are no hard, specific numbers. My other thought was Sadaharu Oh in Japan, but he hit 868.

That's how many Josh Gibson supposedly hit. Or was it the guy from Japan? Sahrahara Oh? (not sure how to spell it).
