Actually I would redo the way welfare operates. Sometimes people need help. Actual help not a handout. For 2 yrs. they would have access to education, employment counseling and housing help. They would have to attend or be cut off. After the 2 yrs. they should be self sufficient. Part of the problem is when people on welfare actually participate and better their lives they are penalized and this just pushes them back onto the welfare roll. Also food stamps should be rethought. You can buy potato chops and soda but you can't buy shampoo and other personal hygiene products. Your question is very judgmental. I had to partake of the welfare system for a short period of time. When I called them and told them I no longer required their help. They would call me once a month and offer me food stamps etc. This went on for 6 months until I wrote them a letter thanking them for their help but no longer call me give it to someone in need. Hope you never need help in your life.

There isn't welfare any more, it's work fare and it comes out to about 50 cents an hour because she has to work for it. And there's a limitation on her getting this couple hundred a month. You're living in the past. Many years ago, more than 12, some people were able to be lazy on welfare. Most, however, didn't stay on more than 2 years. And most either remarried or got a job. Welfare is slavery. It's punative. It doesn't take into consideration health problems, lack of child care, lack of transportation, women's low wages, etc. Most people on welfare are single women and children and they don't get it for free. Like I said, they have to work for it without pay. NO a check of 200 something a month to work full time is not getting paid. How can someone pay rent, utilities, and work expenses on that? A better solution would be better health care, better child care, people who help with transportation, and better job placement. I've applied for all of those jobs Americans supposedly won't do and was denied most of the time in favor of a male and in favor of a Mexican. So don't give me that all poor Americans are lazy on free welfare and Mexicans HAVE to come here to do their jobs bullshit. Because unless you've ever been sick, unemployed, under employed, poor or had to compete with immigrants you don't know what the eff you're talking about. Summary: Lazy people can't get welfare because it's work fare. Lazy people get absolutely nothing as do alot of not lazy people.

lol... you know how to make your opinion known. I do think that welfare benefits should be limited. A person should have to prove, against very stringent guidelines, that they can't work. If they are unemployed for whatever reason, then the get the welfare for awhile, then it dries up... decrease check amount whatever... until it's gone. Make the person get out and find a means of supporting themselves. I also believe that people should have to pay something when they use their medicaid.... My wife works in a hospital ER and I can't tell you how many medicaid people come in at 3 in the morning for things as simple as hangnails, bad breath, heartburn.... it's all such stupid stuff and you and I pay for it. Their humpteen meds they take, some of them pay for part of them, but I think any med, doctor visit... anything like that, they should pay something, even if it's just $5. Believe me, people would complain like crazy, but they always seem to have money for their beer and smokes. Go figure.
The problem as I see it, is that, though originally a good idea (perhaps), the welfare system over time has created a nation of people with a mentality of entitlement... "I deserve it, you owe me." As long as people are handed a living without earning it, that's how it's gonna be.

I agree. What really pisses me off is the fact that on welfare Wednesday (the day checks are issued) the hospitals are overloaded with overdoses. Why can't the hospitals report the OD's to social services so us tax payers can stop paying for their drugs?
To ooo! I know
I was not making any generalizations. I was talking about a specific problem with taxpayers paying welfare to people who use the money for drugs. And for your information I HAVE walked in their shoes. My Mother was a single working mom with 4 kids and there were times we had to rely on welfare to get by. I thank God it was there for us. However, if we stopped handing it out so readily to the people mis-using it, the money could be better spent on the people that really needed it.

whole_truth1? Truth is not based on generalities and presumption. Although the system is flawed, the rules have changed on how to qualify and many on welfare have jobs but still need help because they can't make ends meet, especially when the absent parent doesn't pay their support to help. Don't judge...you obviously have never walked in those shoes.

we have so much land , we should bring in more people that are willing to work / pay taxes . if they cause problems here we should have an option to send them home during there probabtion sort of period. citizenship should become easier not take years. no one should be forced to live forced in this land as an illegal because they have no other choice. we are a country that would welcome many new people if we did not have to support them. many families here are struggling to support themselves. just my own opinions. lol :-)
