So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.
Why haven't we heard from them?
Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.
Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.
Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.
Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.
Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.
It is really impossible to know for sure.
The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

with the vastness of space the chances of there being life on other planets is still lower than that of them running into an object to get here... so you know what i am trying to say lets say you r traveling at 1/4 the speed of light, you would not see a object the size of a dime just floating around in space as you came upon it. BAM no more ship, the object would destroy the ship. so yes aliens exist but no they are not here.

It's got to be true, cause the universe is both infinite and ever-expanding. our solar system is like, a tiny tiny tiny piece of the universe.
Yes, im willing to bet that there are many other intelligent species, but what they look like we do not know. It's just a matter of which one we get to first (if we last that long).

I think that its true. The universe is endless, so I think it's very arrogant to think that we are the only life in the universe. I highly believe that there's life somewhere else in the universe, maybe not as advanced as us, but who knows maybe there's life that's more advanced then us. =] Hope this helped.

If they do exist, and they probably do, AND they are bound to the same laws of physics that we are, and they probably are, it's unlikely they'll ever visit us out here in the galactic boondocks.
