How would you base it on statistics. Which statistics would guarantee your entry? That wouldn't take defense into account. And as it should be, the all star game is for the fans. The players that the fans want to see are the ones they should be able to see. They make up for this by letting the manager choose the backups, this way, most, if not all of the deserving players make the roster.

Listen.. New Yorkers don't vote and stuff the ballot. It's always been smaller-markets that did that... so, let's be realistic. There's about 7 million fans that attend MLB games and of those that live in NY, CT and NJ... how many do you think are even voting for a Carlos Beltran (since we SEE him hitting .200 and dogging it in the OF, every game?). It's people OUTSIDE of NY that are voting for him.
Hate to wake you up, but baseball is far down on the scale of things, around here (even with 2 teams) - and voting for the Allstar game was NEVER, ever something we cared about (and our players were most usually UNDER represented... before the Yankees-You-Know won all the WS in the late-90s (and if you think Jeter or Arod or Pettitte or Wang or Posada or even Cano should NOT be on the All-Star team you are OUT OF YOUR MIND).
Now, the Mets are running a full-out campaign to get Paul LoDuca into the All-Star game -- and it's laughable, here. First, he doesn't deserve it. Second, only the Mets-TV channel even cares -- fans watching won't be compelled to vote for him, unless they are 11 yrs old.

the all star game is nothing more than a popularity contest
its a moneymaker for the MLB and host city
all it means is you are a popular player having a good year, rather than in the past when it was you were a spectacular player, better than anyone else in your league at you position
if you take fan voting away you take it away from the fans, and lose revenue because of it
thats why managers pick the reserves. so those really good, less popular players can make the game

The system will never be fair. I mean look at Maggio Ordonez. He's having a monster season. Is he going to start? Nope...
At least Joe Torre once again is not managing the team. In those days, about 4-5 Yankees would get picked by the Yankee fans stuffing the ballot boxes, and then good ol' Joe would pick about 8 more to be reserves.

The All-Star game is a big joke. Why shouldn't the casual fan have his little candy? One year everyone complains about how badly the fans vote and the next they whine about how Nolan Ryan is left off the team. Real baseball hasn't anything to do with the All-Star game anyway. Let it go.

It can be frustrating, but the whole point of the All-Star game is to provide a showcase for the players fans want to see. If that means having to watch a team made up of big-market players, well, so be it.
I'm not a fan of a free-spending team, but I don't let the All-Star stuff bother me. Really, it's pretty meaningless when compared with the rest of the season.

I agree with you. Miguel Cabrera is doing 100 time better than David Wright oh and guess whos leading in votes i give you a hint is not Miguel. Maglio Ordoñez he's having an MVP season and he's not going to star. It happen every year so yeah i agree with you.

I agree completely, but I've also excepted the fact that the All-Star game is joke. David Ortiz is beating Justin Morneau by 700,000 votes for 1st base. Last time I checked, Ortiz doesn't play defense.

Go Mets!!! But yea I hear you. I'm a Mets fan, and yes I vote for the Mets I feel really deserve to be in it. But I don't vote for all the Mets. If I feel that someone deserves it more, than I vote for them. It's a popularity contest, and it should be done a different way. But unforturnatly, I don't see them changing that.

It was chosen based on stats, the starting lineup for the American League would be composed of mostly Detroit Tigers. I am a Tiger fan, and I for one would not want to see that (even though I think the Tigers would whip a National League All Star team).
