First be sure to identify the noise from the area you describe. It sounds weird, but either use a stethoschope of a large solid screwdriver and touch different parts of the valve train and listen to the end of the screwdriver while the motor is running and when the noise is very loud, you are very close to which one is noisy. You will now have to take off the rocker cover to confirm. What will normally be the case is there will be a rocker arm that is noticeably loose as compared with the ones around it. That is your culprit. Be aware that a noisy lifter can be caused by worn out parts in the whole valve train. You can be experiencing a rocker arm noise because the rocker arm nut has backed off, worn out rocker arm, worn out push rod, worn out lifter, and usually when a lifter wears out it will also have a worn out camshaft lobe for that lifter. This is why you have to determine the correct cause of the noise before you start replacing parts or decide the truck isn't worth the fix before disassembly. Good luck.

If you want to do this yourself, start by removing the valve cover for that side which you feel it's coming from. This will reveal the rockers and push rods that are part of the valve train, you will see that the rockers are on individual studs, make sure that the nut that holds the rocker has not backed off making it loose and noisy,if they are OK then proceed to next check, using a piece of wood(I use a hammer the handle is hard enough not to splinter)push down on the push rod side of rocker,it should not move,if it does you have found the bad lifter. If you intend to replace lifter then replace ALL lifters.
To replace lifters you will have to remove the intake manifold, you do not have to remove the rockers completely just back off the nut so that you can swing them out of the way to remove push rods(reason for not removing rockers,it eliminates the need to try and keep them in the same order of removal),and saves a bit of time. Before you put new lifters in the block prime them with oil,to do this put them in a pan with enough depth to cover the lifters while they are submerged push the centre of lifter, they are like little pumps
they will draw oil into the hydraulic chamber. When you have got all of the lifters installed, rotate the pivots(rockers) onto the push rods make sure they are aligned correctly and torque the nuts to 18ft/lbs,install valve covers and intake manifold, the rest I think you know.
