Tough call - what kinds do you like?

A 20 gallon would be suitable for 1-2 fancy goldfish, any of the livebearers, a nice school or two of tetras barbs, and/or danios, a spawning group of 1 male and 3 female dwarf puffers, a pair of smaller cichlids (apistos, rams), an all-female betta tank (could house 10-15 easily).

You could do a community of 6-7 of any one type of barb, tetra, rasbora, or danio, a group of 3-4 corydoras or kuhli loaches, and a single showy "centerpiece fish" gourami, dwarf gourami, or male betta. Or change to a group of 1 male and 2-3 female livebearers and make your single a larger catfish, such as a whiptail (farowella) catfish or a smaller pleco species (bristlenose, rubbernose, etc.).

Or do some "oddball" species - loaches, African butterfly (a little harder care).

Or be really different and go all inverts (shrimp, snails, crayfish) or do a brackish tank with some land area and keep either red claw crabs or fiddler crabs. The freshwater snails and shrimp species can also be added to a freshwater tank, as could one or two African dwarf frogs (not clawed or albino frogs, they eat fish).

Of course, since this is a NEW tank, I wouldn't suggest adding more than 2-3 smaller fish at a time until your tank bacteria have a chance to get established.

yes it is to small. At the moment it should be in a 40 gallon and full grown your looking a a 100-120 gallon. Since you can't afford a tank, try kijiji or craigslist, they sometimes have them for cheap or even free. Or you could buy a large rubbermaid tub, it's a lot cheaper then a new tank. If you still can't afford raise some money mowing lawns or shoveling driveways. You'll have it in no time.

Ok so if its a new tank and your a new fish keeper, I suggest you go for a hardy fish such as a, Guppie, platie or swordtail. These are good begginer fish and easy to take care of, Get males tho, Or your tank will be over populated, Make sure ur tank is cycled etc . And only get 3-4 fish today, Dont add to many and watch your water parimeters

There are several different kinds of goldfish, some are not gold. We once had what I called bug eyed fish. Just dont get oscars because they get huge. But I personally would get a type of goldfish and or neons.
