Best way to go is to set yourself up with a Amazon.com account. It's not about buying if you don't need to. What they do is look at books you have read and/or rated and use that information to recommend books by similar topic, author etc.

I am not sure what you consider the "young adult level"
Try Stephen King's "Cell" about what happens with the current from the cell phone affects people's brain.
As an adult, I found the entire series by Laura Ingalls Wilder fantastic. History with a touch of love to make the books, about ten of them, very interesting even if you never watch the TV series. But after reading the books, you will see how much fiction the TV series was in reality.
I find the stories by Nora Roberts, usually two to one book, very enjoyable. She has had several made into movies for either Hallmark or TLC cable.
And lastly as a child I read the books on Easter Island and Egypt very informative and fun.

If you are open to the metaphysical, The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield is realistic fiction.
If you like that one, The Celestine Vision and the The Tenth Insight follows.
These books sharpen your intuition.

Lurlene McDaniel. She's writes about young teens who deal with life-altering experiences. Most are gettting some kind of disease, but there have been others. My personal favorite of hers is "Don't Die, My Love." You should check her out. She's really good.
