I have painted my cabinets and they look great. First, wash them really well with TSP cleaner. Be careful, it is caustic so wear gloves. Then lightly sand the cabinets. Use a good primer and then two coats of paint. The paint store will tell you what kind to use. If you take the fronts off be sure to number them so they go back in the correct place. Finish with new knobs and pulls and they will look wonderful.

You can get a stripper and strip them down to bare wood, or you can sand them down. If the finish is a very thin coating, sand them down just enough to "scuff up" the surface a bit, then apply a good quality primer before painting. Be sure to use a semi-gloss or satin finish paint for the best outcome, and apply at least two even coats, lightly sanding between coats if necessary.
Another money (and time) saving option is to replace just the doors and drawer fronts after painting the cabinet bases.

Regardless of which way you go, identifying the style you're looking for will help narrow your focus on the available choices and also provide some guidance to kitchen designers or cabinets makers you might work with. Paint is an easy, and inexpensive way to give simple cabinets a modern look. The first step is choosing a color, draw inspiration from something in the room, a rug, fabric or an accessory you love. Cabinets are chosen first during these meetings, because they are the biggest investment in the kitchen. And the kitchen is one of the biggest investments in the house.

First, wash them down with a grease remover like "Mean Green Cleaner." (Without this step, no paint is going to stick for long.) Then, I'd suggest spray painting for the best results.
Remove the doors from their hinges and the remove any pulls or hardware. Spray them (outside) first with primer, then your chosen color. Then, with the windows open for ventilation, spray the exterior of the cabinets.
If you use a fast drying paint, like Krylon, you could have the doors back up and in place by the end of the day.

Wash them down well and let dry. Sand lightly and use a good primer to help the new paint stick. Then paint to the color of your choice.
