ok from a shop owner let me put it together for you rinse battery off with lots of clean water next remove both cables negatave first next using a small battery cleaning tool or small wire brush brush the batters posts clean (they should have a shine to them not dull ) than do the cables in the same manor making sure to do the inner part of the cable I used a350 grit sand paper flush everything with water again towel dry top of battery replace the cables starting with the postive first DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN tighten just enough so cables do not move using your hand to try an twist if it moves tighten a little more now the corresion on the cables is caused from the gasses leaving the battery mixed with air / moisture So u can slow or prevent it by coating the termanls with a grease or a special paint that u can pick up in auto parts store
I always paint than apply a meadium coat of grease Both are not neccery but i like the added protection
Take your time an always wash hands after wear rubber gloves if u can u are remove a acid build up

Coke will not clean, it only makes a sticky mess. Go to you local parts store & buy a spray can of battery terminal cleane & a spray can of battery terminal protector. Use them per printed instructions
Leecavcu is 100% correct on removing the negative cable first & installing it last upon completion of the project.
A wire brush works very well for cleaning the post & cable ends, It will not spark.

Using Coca Cola or baking soda and water mixture only removes the corrosion. Once that's removed, use a wire brush or battery terminal cleaning tool to clean the actual battery posts.

First take off the negative cable so you don't short anything out. Then the positive cable. Pour some soda on the terminal and brush it with some steel wool. That will clean it up pretty easily. Also, make sure you put the positive cable on before the negative. This is because if your negative is on first, the positive cable will cause a short circuit if you touch something with it. If the positive is on first, the negative won't do anything if you touch something with it.

Just get a wire brush, and give it a good scrub. any tough spots can be dealt with by using some fine grade abrasive paper.
After that a very thin smear of vaseline over them will keep them from going the same way again.
