x is the independent variable and can take on any real value in the range -infinity < x < + infinity.
The values that x can take on is called the domain and the values tha y takes on as a result is called the range.

In your case, y=mx+b is the equation of a straight line which extends forever in both directions. b is the y- intercept and is where the line crosses the y-axis. Notice that when x = 0, y = b. m is the slope of the line. if m>0, then the line rises as you go from left to right. If m<0, then the line falls as you go from left to right. If m = 0, then the equation becomes y=b which is just a straight line passing through the point (0,b) and is parallel to the x-axis. There is no x-intercept in this case.

y = mx + b
mx = y - b
x = (y - b) / m

x doesn't necessarily have to be equal to zero to find y but you must have the values for m, x and b. m is the slope of the line and b is the y-intercept

X is the independent variable and can be anything.

This is an equation of a line which you can plot after making number substitutions for M and B.

When X = 0, Y=B.
When Y = 0, X = -B/M
Plot the two points (0,B) and (-B/M, 0) to get your line.

we need more numbers. y=mx+b is the slope formula. X and Y are the co-ordinates your either given, or need to find. M is the slope (such as 1/3, -4, etc.) and B is the y intercept.

'X' is the independant variable. It is any number you "plug in" to the equation to find the value of 'Y'. It does not have to be zero, it can be any number.

Other than that, the guys above re-worked the basic equation to put it in terms of X = (Y - B)/M
.
