Lightning strikes a power pole and blows out a transformer, strong winds snap lines or cause trees to break apart and land on power lines, or bad drivers drive into power poles and knock them down.

Lots of reasons.

During a violent thunder storm, the combination of lightning, strong gusts of wind is capable of breaking off branches of, or even uprooting trees, falling on to live suspended power lines nearby. Causing disruption of electric power, to many businesses and residents. Power to be restored sometimes takes as long as a day, by utility crews depending on the extent of the damage.

Power lines often attract lightning.
When this happens, a large surge of electricity flows in the cable and trips out a breaker in a sub-station or at the power plant.
If it actually damages a transformer or other power unit, then it sometimes takes a good while to restore power.

Usually in a thunder storm you get the whole works, rain, wind etc. It's often a tree or branch hitting either a power cable, or the generating place, so they have to either knock it off, or it is too damaged,.
