I got the tank a few days ago. I got a new filter and let the water condition for a little over a day. I just added a couple of fish yesterday afternoon then this morning I woke up and the water has a fogginess to it. It's not so foggy you can't see anything, it just makes it so the tank isnt as bright and pretty as it was. Is there something I am doing wrong, or should do? Or is this just what happens until the tank kinda settles? Thanks ahead for your answers.

Just to clarify... It is NEW. I cleaned it a couple of days ago thoroughly before I put ANY fish in it. Also, it has a lid. I have the wood stand and lid and lights and the whole deal. It is 55 gallons.

Your tank is just cycling - it's normal for any new tank and the water will appear cloudy for the next 3-6 weeks. This is caused by bacteria that break down the fish wastes into less toxic forms. As long as there's more ammonia and nitrite in the water than the bacteria are able to convert, they'll multiply rapidly and it's this "bacterial bllom" that makes your water seem cloudy. If you try to tear down the tank and clean it, you'll only prolong the process. Once the bacteria population has reached the point that all the ammonia and nitrite is being converted, the reproduction will slow down and the tank will clear up. Since both ammonia and nitrite are toxic to your fish, the bacteria are something you want to have.

If you see your fish gasping at the top of the tank, becoming lethargic, losing their appetites, bloody streaks appearing on their fins, these are all symptoms of ammonia poisoning, and you should do a 25% water change to reduce the amount present. Even better, an ammonia test kit will let you know when the ammonia concentration rises to 0.5ppm (level where fish begin to feel stress) so you can do water changes sooner.

Some times setting up a new tank can cloud your water a few days. When you but stone for the tank there are small particles that fall of when you fill it. Also the you are suppose to let the water condition for 4 days so the water has time to balance bacteria that is essential for the fish otherwise the hormones of the fish don't register with the water and the fish releases some of those hormones and clods the water. Also if you put live plants in the tank that can sometimes cloud it. The tank not balancing out in time could form algae fogging the water. also if you put to much food in the tank the first time that Can also cloud the water. Thre are also mant other ways for a tank to cloud. If it stays cloudy go to your local pet store or order online at the links below. Sometimes that is just the cycle of a new tank ( I personally have set up over 75 tanks and about forty five percent cloud up for the first few days. I hope this helps and have areally nice day.

This is normal until the tank "settles". Do you have water testing and treating supplies so you can make sure your nitrate and ammonia levels are okay? Adding new fish can cause spikes in these that your new filter might now be keeping up with. Beneficial bacteria has not had a chance to establish in such a new tank, either. There are products to help your new fish adjust to the new tank...talk to your fish person at the store.

the fogginess isnt serious it always happens your filter can't clean everything so there is some algae, poop, and other stuff floating around. I have fish and it always happens but thats fine just make sure it doesnt get to bad or start turning green. Fish also release chemicals but that will start clearing up cause it just has to cycle around.

you know that if you dont have a lid top for youre fish tank then sometimes at night the dust from youre room or house can get into the fish tank water make dirty or have foggies . i would do is take out the fish and replace her or him in a clean water then take whatever you put in the tank take them out and then t pour out the dirty water , next i would just wash the whole tank with useing the kitchen running water with dish wash soap wash inside and out then raise it like 5 times til there arent no soapy left . then youre tank will look very shiney and clean . if you only have those small fish tank . you odnt need to use cold or hot water for fish tank maybe use between warm water instead. if it only pet store fish not ocean . u can still use the new filter too.

Your tank is trying to cycle. Keep a check on the ammonia levels and it should be fine in a few weeks.
