I'd like to think that were true, but not all of us are happy all the time. We have our ups and downs like everyone else. But if you ask me, I believe the term got associated with homosexuals because a lot of us are colorful and lively. Even in our darkest hour, we can see the bright side of things and make the most of what we have and what makes us happy.

The term "gay" meaning "happy" is derived from the OF "gai". As far back as the 17th century it was being used as euphemism for "uninhibited by moral restraints" or "addicted to pleasures/dissipation's". In the 19th century it was understood to refer a lifestyle of extra-marital sexuality, mostly heterosexual, hence "Gay '90s", "Gay Lothario", and "Gay Paris". It was first applied to homosexual activity in the 1920s by Gertrude Stein and Noel Coward, and adopted as term of preference by the growing "Gay Civil Rights Movement" in the 60s. That was what promoted the backlash in the late 60s and early 70s of people trying to claim it had never had any sexual connotations prior to it's adoption by the homosexual community.

The word gay was associated with flamboyance and style, hence "Don we now our gay apparel" (from the song "Deck the Halls"), "gay nineties" (1890s) and "gay Paris" in the late 1800s. Oscar Wilde was the epitome of gay. After it became publicly known that Wilde was homosexual in 1895, the word began to have a sexual undertone. By the 1920s it was being used to describe homosexuals, mostly among homosexuals themselves or those sympathetic to homosexuals. In the 1960s, the word became more commonly used among the general population and by the 1970s was the term was widely used to refer to homosexual people.

"Gay" has more than one meaning, for those who bother to consult a dictionary.
People who are living the lives God chose for them, instead of living a lie, are much happier, yes.
