Does this make the Ducks a bigger player in the free agency market? That is close to 7 million off the cap so one would think so. Not to mention if/when Selanne goes, another salary gone (not that he is signed anyway)
Some of the $ will obviously go toward Giguere but who else do you think would end up there?
My guess would be Brian Rafalski and who knows maybe they could make a big splash with Briere or Drury or Gomez etc.........thoughts?

Md -of course I mean Scott, considering HE IS the one considering retirement. Also, don't forget that the Ducks have missed the play-offs with "Giggy", even one year after he was Conn Smythe winner so nothing is "for sure"

Well, I didn't consider Brian Rafalski before, but you have shown me the light, lol... I was figuring they would be contending with SJ first for Drury---Briere or Gomez being a good secondary possibility.

Something of my own to add: Okay, so I read someone spouting off that they'd love to see Vinny Lecavalier go to the Ducks if the Lightning are shipping someone from the "Big 3" out. (The general consensus from rumors is that Lecavalier would be the one going.) I guess this is technically possible (Lecavalier's salary is +$7m, Anaheim's potential cap space is around $7m) but I just don't see this blockbuster deal going down. If Lecavalier's going anywhere, it's to a team with more cap space than Anaheim, like Philly... Even if it means going to the defending Stanley Cup champions, I don't see Lecavalier taking a paycut of a couple million. So forget it Duckers.

Losing Niedermayer and Selanne would really hurt. The truth is that there are no free agents that will really replace those two. You can take a stab at Rafalksi or Souray, and they are decent, but neither of them will come even close to replacing Scott. Briere and Drury and Gomez are all nice, but if you lose Selanne, you're really going to want a decent top level wing, not another center. That said, losing Niedermayer and Selanne will open up enough money to make sure everyone else is signed, and free agency will definitely be an option. If I were you, thoug, I'd start praying that both of these guys stay. Unless Burke has a really great trade up his sleeve, those two guys will not be easily replaced.

Um I'm assuming you mean Scott because there are 2 Neidermayer's on the Ducks.

I don't worry about the Ducks at all, I've seen there AHL club The Portland Pirates, lots of talent in there, that can be signed for cheep, as long as they keep Giggy, they will always be a contender in the playoffs.

It's hard to say what the Duck's will do but you can bet your behind Burke is working to convince Scott to play at least one more year for him. Which ever way he goes, Burke needs an answer in the next 10 days so he can formulate a plan of attack for the upcoming year.
Winning the cup is tough but in today's NHL it's even harder to defend your title.
