well researchers found the size of the planet
not by going around it and measuring it
but by using location of many different points on the earth and the angles it forms with unmoving planetary objects (usually the north star) they use geometry to find the circumference

the layers were first discovered by scientist many years ago when they noticed different colored layering of mountains and cliffs

using seismic (i don't think i spelled it right) waves they can determine the density and depth of the many layers of the earth right to the core

thanks to technology and advanced mathematics we now know much about the inside of the earth but not enough

i'm no longer stressful. maximum of what we are witnessing now, we've witnessed interior the geologic checklist. The supposition of a synthetic causality has oftentimes been debunked.. most of the aspects replace dogma has been written via pseudo-scientists who're anti-business anarchists. I even have little admire for a so-call technology that refuses to permit for peer evaluation. the aformentioned businesses are complicit in spreading the mythos. One actuality, faith isn't technology. while people ask what I "have faith" i desire to strangle them. technology is approximately data, and till a theory is shown with irrefutable records, it is not from now on perfect than a dogmatic concept gadget.

One thing scientists use to determine thickness and composition of the Earth's layers are seismic waves. These different types of waves behave differently in different materials (i.e. p-waves slow down in liquid; s-waves don't go through liquid).

Look up the different types of seismic waves to see how they behave in the Earth's interior.

by studying the rock strode in places like the grand canyon the rocks there go down to what geologists call basement rock they are the first rocks formed. they study all the layers of rocks that are exposed.
