Because it is a popularity and name recognition selection by the fans and not numbers. You can be assured that most of the fans voting for these players have no clue what kind of numbers the player is putting up this year. Since the winning league from the all-star game also controls who gets home field advantage in the world series, the game now has significance. It might be time to give the selection process back to the players and MLB managers and take it out from the fans who don't know what they are voting for..

The all-star game has been, and always will be a popularity contest. There are a lot of Red Sox fans out there, and they're passionate, so they get the vote out. Torri Hunter plays in a small market, and it's a wonder why he's never become more popular. Magg's is a nice player, in another smallish market. I'm quite surprised that Grady Sizemore isn't leading the votegetters. He's probably the best all around player of the 4. To the person who says Boston is a bigger market than Chicago, I have no clue what he's talking about.

More people have heard of Manny Ramirez than the other players on the list, more people in Boston could be voting... Fans vote for the All Star starters which means that sometimes that best players don't get elected to go to the All Star game. Since Jim Leyland is the manager of the AL team and gets to pick the reserves, he will probably put Magglio Ordonez on the team.

The All-Star game is supposed to be a game for the fans. Therefore balloting for starters is done by the fans. This is basically a popularity vote. If a player has become a household name, they will start the game. There are plenty of instances where a veteran in his declining years has started in place of a younger player who is having a better year. Albert Pujols will probably get the start at 1B for the NL even though Prince Fielder is beating him in most offensive categories.
With this format of choosing starters, the coachs pick the reserves. This way deserving players are less likely to be bypassed. Recently MLB has started the 25th man voting. That way fans can include 1 more player they feel has been unfairly outlooked.

Yeah it's not right, but Manny is popular. The All Star game is for the fans. If the fans want to see Manny then they vote for him.

So far, everyone is correct. Fans vote for thier favorite player because they want to see them play.
The All Star Game USED to be an exhibition game the AL & NL. Not true anymore. It USED to be for bragging rights; whose better the Nl or the AL.
Not true anymore.
It's gotten to the point where I dont care anymore, thank you mr selig for messing that one up!
The only reason I am going to watch it this year is because Jim Leyland is managing it. Otherwise I wouldnt watch it this year.

The votes for the All Star Game are basically based on popularity. Also, Boston is a much bigger market than Chicago, Minnesota, and Cleveland

It is the flaw in having fans vote for an all-star team, they think of the past and vote for their favorite players (Boston has fans EVERYWHERE!). The other three deserve it more but fans vote on heart not brains!

This is the result of not letting the players & managers vote for the All-Star. The fans don't pick the best. They pick their favorite.

Most fans just vote for their favorite players, regardless of statistics. Manny did his thing for years and won over alot of people that will always vote for him, even if he doesn't deserve it.
