I think there is a very telling point in how you phrased your question: you asked if humans were 'just' animals. Which suggests that you think that being an animal would mean being significantly less that being a human. So let's look a that. What, exactly, is it about animals that supposedly makes them so inferior?
Animals are obviously less intelligent than most humans. But that doesn't make them UNintelligent. Animals quite obviously learn things. They have personalities. And as far as we can tell they experience most of the feelings that we do. It's not hard to find any number of animals that have more learning and wisdom than a human baby. Even if you're relying on these mental characteristics for your superiority, you haven't had them all your life!
If you're looking for a soul, you are either vastly more perceptive than anyone I know or are making assumptions. If you were to prove that even humans had souls, you'd probably win a Nobel prize. And how can you know that animals DON'T have souls?
So really what is it that is supposed to be so abominable about being like thinking, feeling animals? I know many animals that are downright decent folk, and to whom I would MUCH rather be related than many humans I can think of. And frankly, I don't take kindly to the idea that humans are so vastly and intrinsically better than them. Very few of them, at least, feel that they are intrinsically better than you.
Peace.

Well, according to catholic religion human have a soul. A human being is an unity of a physical, psychological and spiritual natures all in one. That means that human being is part animal.
Also for catholic religion human do not have instinct as an animal does, but tendencies, that means that was an animal have the instinct to reproduce and survive, a human can freely choose not to reproduce or survive.
There is no objection, so far as faith is concerned, to assuming the descent of all plant and animal species from a few types. In regarding to man, theory of evolution do not consider the god intervention in order to give soul to the humanity. For catholic religion god gives soul to the man, but that do not mean that his psychical frame do not came from monkey.
But there is an atheistic theory of evolution, that it is that humanity only comes from evolution, and there is no room for soul.
Then the Darwin theory is often confuse people with other theories of evolution. Darwin states that the breeding of new species depends on the survival of the fittest in the struggle for existence. Haeckel, with other materialists, has enlarged this selection theory of Darwin's into a philosophical world-idea, by attempting to account for the whole evolution of the cosmos by means of the chance survival of the fittest.
So that's the beginning of modern world race superiority issues, violence and war: Darwin theory. That means if Hitler believes his race or whatever are the fittest, he must eradicate others who are not, after all it is all about survival.

Man being held in honour, but without understanding is compared unto the beasts of the field that perish. (Psalm 8) Exercise your brain, Its what you were evolved to do. No one with a grain of sense ever said we descended from monkeys, although we share some common features and genetic codes which point to what may have been billions of years ago a common ancestor. Is this that much different from taking up the mud from the earth and breathing life into it? Be as mysterious as you like, you came from the earth and are going to return to it.
[Why is it in every argument between Creationists and Evolutionists the only animal I see mentioned is a monkey, an animal Darwin didn't write about? Evolution is not a lie formulated as an attack on the Bible, it is scientific fact based on hard work and rigorous application of the scientific method. Darwin didn't write about anthropology, paleontology, or archaeology, there are no missing links. He tested the hypothesis by extensive, if not exhaustive work with living species, collecting, cataloguing and examining a very large number of specimens of birds (especially finches), insects ( mostly beetles of hundreds of varieties), flowers (especially lobellias), and lizards (especially the highly individuated iguanas of the Galapagos Islands. He obtained results he had not set out to find, but disprove. His data is all independently verifiable and accurate.]

I think a monkey is pretty mysterious.
And actually the theory is that humans evolved from APES, not MONKEYS (there's a big difference.)And if they can communicate and have emotions and tell stories and paint art (see link below), how do we know they don't have souls?
-----------
From MY NAME IS EARL:
Earl: How was your first day of school?
Randy: Great! I really enjoyed science class. Did you know that before we were humans we were monkeys?
Earl: Really? What were we before monkeys?
Randy: I don't know. I can't even remember being a monkey.

No. I believe humans descended from a common ancestor of monkeys and apes, or at least it was something that looked and behaved similarly.
Humans are a lot like apes, but there are obvious behavioral and anatomical differences.
No ape walks upright. Why did humans lose most of their fur and start wearing clothes? Why don't apes talk (whales, dolphins and birds have more complicated verbal communcation than apes and monkeys)?
Whether you want to call them animals or not, humans are definitely unique.

I have no objection to the idea that the theory of evolution may be wrong. You have every right to express this opinion, but please get your facts straight and present a logical arguement to support your point. What if animals have souls? God created them too. Man DID NOT evolve from monkeys, monkeys and men evolved from a common ancestor, along different evolutionary paths, what is wrong with the idea that God created life and allowed it to evolve and change as free will entitled it to? Free will is God's gift to all creatures and humans used it to thier best advantage, how can you believe that the world was created in 9 days a few thousand years ago? what do you say to all of the physical proof of evolution? what are the FACTS to support your idea(and there IS scientific fact to support it) please research into your beliefs and find evidence to support them instead of just blindly following what others have told you. There is nothing in the bible that says that learning and education is wrong, NOTHING.

Man didn't come from a monkey. Since we're both around now, we obviously took different turns on the evolutionary path. We both evolved from something more basic then the both of us.
Human beings are just animals. We might have more technology, but, deep down, we creatures with no special anything. We can build and control fires, and have invented things like war, but a polar bear will do better then we would in the Arctic. A shark would do better in the ocean, and so on.

I don't have a soul and I challenge you to prove that I do.
'Came from a monkey' is a distortion of science's current perspective on the evolution of life on this planet.

Absolutely No, whosoever thought of that crazy idea needs to be lock up in an assylum. Go to any zoo in the world and ask yourself is that possible. Any idea that could possibly make sense only if you conjugate science and religion such as satan transforming himself into a serpent. yet I don't see mankind running around on fours to have while us being a specie like it. The specie is an animal, animals don't have dominion over humans. It's also possible to assume that at one time in evolution mankind was able to communicate with animals and even hunted them for food. Why, because we eat animals, we even have to cook the food to consume it. Animals don't, they survive and adapt to climatic changes and eventually go extinct while we evolve without change.
GOD's creation.
