it means that you dont have their screen name but they have yours and they want to talk to you. most likely its someone you know

Well if you have a public profile on the IM service or list your IM on a public profile anywhere on the internet, it could be spam or someone who's just bored and looking for someone to talk to.
If you don't have a public profile or don't use that IM service, then someone has probably been using the IM on your computer.

There is a 99% chance that it is spam spam spam spam spam spam eggs and spam.
I will sometimes get a message that such-and-such person would like to speak with me. Right...whatever. Any person wishing to speak with me would know not to reach me in that manner.

prolly spam...hard to tell though. If you were logged in, then it's either someone whom has your ID and tried to chat with you, or someone who just randomly found it, and is a bot/spam
