Don't ask others. Do as your mom says.

I began my cycle at 14 but didn't use tampons until 16. I had a hard time inserting them in. I was not sexually active. Also, the only ones that we had around the hosue were for my sister, who began when she was 9. She is younger. She used the large supersized ones, and I just could not get it to work. I finally purchased a slender pack at the store when I began t work, and had found tampons to be the best thing ever. I never went back to pads.

Some parents do not want their children to use tampons, afraid it can hurt them, as they are still young.

Some parents I have spoken to, do not want the children inserting anything in there, because it is meant for something different... if you get what I mean.

I have a friend who is my age, 28, and still will not use them.

I personally do not see how I did band camp for 2 years in the 95 + heat and humidity of the midsouth with pads.

I was 9 when I started getting my period. I didn't try to use a tampon until I was 14, but it actually got stuck halfway in! I know why now, but I was new and too embarrassed to ask mom for help then. I freaked out so much. I didn't try using them again until I was about 16. Now, I use them pretty much all of the time, unless my period is really light, or I'm having bad cramps.

Since this is only my second period, I don't think I will be using tampons for a while. However, my friend uses them and she is only on her fourth period. All moms have different rules and a different say in things. Just remember that if you don't wear them you can't swim until your period is over. that's just the difference between pads and tampons. Tampons can be worn while you are swimming.

Any age. Athletes (especially swimmers and dancers) tend to start using them earlier.

Some parents prefer if their daughters start using them later as some users experience discomfort and/or assume that tampon users are more likely to experiment with sex earlier. There is no correlation between these two, that I know of.

Also, there are more risks associated with tampons than with pads.

I didn't use them until my early 20's. My mom never showed me b/c she didn't use them. But I don't think age matters. Moms are just scared to lose their little girls...
But BTW tampons (plastic) are great... much better than pads. Especially if you play sports.

My daughter got her first period on the 4th of July, just as we were ready to leave for a big pool party. I started her on tampons right then so she could still go swimming, etc. She was 11.....she's 22 now.....never a problem!

I started them when I was twelve! Make sure to take them out every 4-6 hours. Do not sleep with them in that could result in Toxic Shock Syndrome.

I was 16, but that was 16 years ago. i think things are different now. Girls are more comfortable with their bodies. Plus they make them in so many varieties and sizes.
