It's how they measure a horse's height. One hand is equal to 4 inches. So a 16.4 hand horse would be 65.6 inches tall at the withers (the highest point of the back, above the shoulder), or about 5'4" tall at the withers.

One hand is equal to 4". Standing the horse square and on level ground, you measure from the ground straight up to the top of the whithers. Every 4" equal one hand so a 15 hand horse will measure at 60". Every inch after that will be a fraction of a hand for example if the horse measures 61" it translates to 15.1 hands.

A hand is the measuring unit you use when measuring a horses height. A hand equals 4 inches. You measure a horses height from the ground to the top of his withers (the bump inbetween were his neck and back meet).

It is the measurement in which we deterimine the height in horses. The equivalent to hand is 4 inches. Here is an example, you don't say 15.4 hands, the measurement turns at 4" so a .3 is the cutoff before you go to the next 4 inch increment... lol, does that make sense... see example:
14 (hands) = 56 inches, etc.
14.1
14.2
14.3
15
15.1
15.2
15.3
16
etc. etc.
Measuring from the horses toe to the wither, while standing square.

It's 4 inches. From centuries ago, when measuring their Arabs, Bedouin people would use the width of their hand to measure their horses. The measure is taken from the ground to the withers.
