How do I fade into obscurity when the press won't let me?

2007-06-20 04:29:01 · 40 answers · asked by abluebobcat 4 in News & Events Media & Journalism

Thanks for all the great advice.

Just wanted to clarify that I am not moaning. I know that many people have much tougher problems to deal with. I was just looking for some impartial advice on how to fade away with out being noticed.

Sorry, can't say as this is one of the only places I can be annonymous.

Take up an occupation or hobby that is far removed from what you are famous for. People are less likely to recognise you, or be interested in any media hype that may surround you.

You may also develop abilities and skills that you thought you never had. See if you can be good at somthing else, for the sake of what you do, not who you are. If money is no object, the options are endless. If you are broke, then the options are also endless.

Also, think about who you want to choose as friends, as they will be the people who support and protect you. And how about your family? What do they think.

Sometimes Yahoo! can be quite a good place to bounce ideas, especially if you pitch your question properly.

Heres to a happy low profile.

I'm writing a blog about all this right now, called 'Bushwacker!' where all the corrupt politicians, corporate greedheads, salacious celebrities and athletes, wealthy elitists, and other lewd characters of fame and fortune have all been assassinated for the good of the country.
As a former newspaper owner/publisher, I've known many 'famous' people who are unhappy with their lot in life all because they weren't careful what they wished for; if you are truly that miserable, you certainly have the resources to find a hideaway island where no one can disturb you or intrude in your life for as long as you want it that way. Go for it! Give up all that fortune and fame and run away from it all. Nevis is beautiful this time of year.....and I'd guess you could go there and no one would even know (or care) who you are! -RKO- 06/20/07

Some say its the price you pay for your fame.
You must be a well known figure for the press to hound you.
If you have the opportunity take a Holiday somewhere remote in the world and don't tell your friends as it might get leaked to the press, then try and chill out.
Everyone has friends and I hope you have a good friend who is there for you when you need them just as much as you would be for them.
The only other option may be therapy of some sort where you can speak to a complete stranger and tell them all your problems in the world and hopefully be at peace with yourself and except the situation.
Good luck

Hmmmmm. You don't mention why you are famous, or infamous, so this will have to be general.

How about this - do nothing.

You can be sure that in short order someone will do something better, or worse, than you did and will get covered.

Someone will say something smarter, or dumber, than you did and will get covered.

Someone's family will be more interesting, or disfunctional than yours and will get covered.

Either way you can rest assured that if you just sit still and do nothing - the press will be provided with a more interesting target and you will be left by the curb....

That's easy...............

- Fake your own death.

- Do something SO TERRIBLE that no one will want to book you ever again (Jonathan King, Paul Gad - I AM OF COURSE NOT SAYING DO WHAT THEY DID, BUT DO SOMETHING THAT THE PUBLIC WILL NOT LIKE AND THEY WILL TURN AGAINST YOU).

- Go live on TV and do something really controversial EG Criticise the McCanns saying that they are bad parents who should be reported to social services. (okay, they are, but the press don't want to go along with that fact.)

- Offend a lot of people EG Tell Stan Bordman's 'Fokker Wolf Joke', that got him banned from TV.

- Announce that 'You want to be alone', do one last round of interviews, take the money and disappear to the South of France.

- Reduce the quality of work (whatever that is) go from Take That to The Fast Food Rockers.

- Get a really bad agent who will let your career spiral downwards "Look sweety, The Royal Variety is SO 1980's, now I've booked you into The Swan Theatre, Hampton Wick, only seats 50, but its the way to go!!!" "Websites DVD's and Pod cast !! Trust me that is WAY OVERATED - Now we need to talk VIDEO - BETAMAX, to be exact !!! "

- Celeb Big Brother.

Depends how you got famous. If it was infamy that brought you to the public eye, then you're gonna have a harder time shaking the press, if not, sack your agent and don't do any work that might interest the press or anything out of the ordinary in the public eye.

Or move abroad. Or release a really bad single. Or fake your own death.

Release a media statement, indicating that you have already died and that your body has been cremated in an undisclosed place. Only family members and closest friends were invited in the final farewell. Granting your wishes, you ashes were also scattered from the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Unless you`ve also been ripped off, you have money to escape from privacy invasion.

Buy an island. Marlon Brando did it.

Move to a small island in the south Pacific or off the coast of Canada.

Depends what you did?

If you sought celebrity you brought it on yourself, and have (hopefully) made enough money to bow out into obscurity on a tiny island in the Indian ocean, Or move to South Africa no one notices celebs there, or the Aussie outback
