Self love, a need for excessive admiration. The word comes from a Greek youth, Narcissus, who didn't like the sexual advances of another goddess, Echo. As punishment he fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, and pinned his life away looking at that reflection.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder(NPD) is characterized by several things:
Fear of abandonment
Fear of intmacy
Need to be special
Tendency to idealize and devalue
Improperly formed ego boundaries(where do I end and the world begins)

These things exists in everyone. But when the needs are excsssive or permeate everything one does is when NPD is diagnosed.
NPD is the result of childhood injuries. Every person is born narcissistic. A child needs to feel that he/she is special to his/her parents. A child also views his/her parents as being perfect providers, able to fulfill all the childs needs. And lastly, the child doesn't see itself as separate from the rest of the world, if I'm hungry the world is hungry.
At some point a child is supposed to grow out of this. But sometimes something happens to interrupt this normal growth process, neglect/abuse by parents, emotional trauma and so on, and this process stops and never gets restarted. This is what's known as arrested development. And then these child-like qualities are carried into adulthood.
Supposedly, all people are narcissistic to some degree. And there's no such thing as a perfect narcissist.

Definitions of narcissism on the Web:

* An excessive preoccupation with one’s own personal importance, or with achieving one’s own chosen goals rather than bonding with others, or with associating only with others whom one chooses. Sometimes psychologists associate narcissism with psychopathology and lack of conscience, but this need not be the case. But there may be lack of emotional empathy or bonding with others. * The ability to be stimulated by one's own body. Most people have this ability as a normal property. Many psychologist will only use the word narcissism when the interest in one`s own body is of such a kind that it makes the person handicapped in his sexual or social relations to other persons.

Narcissim is when you're totally, completely absorbed in yourself. It's actually a psychological condition. It interferes with interactions with others because the narcissist is so preoccupied with themselves that they feel no empathy towards others. The term 'narcissim' is derived from a Greek myth. It goes like this: a man named Narcissa was very handsome, and he loved looking at himself. In fact, he liked it so much he went near a pond one day and started looking at his reflection. He was so absorbed he never moved again, and eventually died.
