There seems to be a lot of overlap with some bears having 2 or 3 names. Are there 10 different species? Thank you.

check this site out, under each subtitle there is a list of bears. For example, if you click on Brown Bear, you will find all of these bears:
Alaskan Brown Bear
Asiatic Brown Bear
European Brown Bear
Grizzly Bear
Himalayian Snow Bear
Kodiak Bear
Syrian Bear
each of these is a different "type"of bear.
I hope this helps!!

There are only the 8 different species of bears listed in other
answers, including the Giant Panda, which is a real bear, its
inclusion in the raccoon family was an error. There are many
more common names than 8, however, some of them just
names for color variants within some of the species. There
are also other kinds of animals for which the common names
include the word bear, although they are not really bears.
The koala "bear" is one of these, one of the anteaters is
sometimes called an ant bear, etc.

There are a LOT of subspecies, but to the taxon level of species and ignoring extinct species...

Spectacled bear, Tremarctos ornatus.
Giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca.
Sun bear, Helarctos malayanus.
Sloth bear, Melursus ursinus.
Brown bear, Ursus arctos.
American black bear, Ursus Americanus.
Polar bear, Ursus maritimus.
Asiatic black bear, Ursus thibetanus.

The grizzly is a subspecies of the brown bear, Ursus arctos horribilis. Others include the European brown bear U. a. arctos, the siberian brown bear, U. a. beringianus, the kodiak bear U. a. middendorffi, and the Tibetan blue bear, U. a. pruinosus.

Extinct species include the cave bear Ursus spelaeus and the short-faced bear, Arctodus simus.

Actually, according to genetic testing, Pandas have been officially classified as bears and are members of the Ursidae family. There was debate for a while, but it seems to be resolved now. They are in the same order carnivora although their diet is 99% bamboo. If you look up the family Ursidae instead of "bears" you'll probably get a lot more hits of bear species.

Do not say Koala bear - it is a marsupial. It carries its young in a pouch.
