What went wrong?
Seems many aspects were visionary?
Just before their time or economically misguided?
Point to specifics please.

clean coal, solar, wind research and development. and of course ethanol.
many of the things that are in vogue now but lost funding during the reagan/bush/clinton years.
again, point to specifics.

Ok, i think most sane folks would agree that reagan helped kill carter's initiatives, but how can we stop that sort of thing from happening again?

What went wrong? Reagan promptly cancelled every aspect that Carter envisioned...
HAd we embraced this concept 27 years ago, doubtful al Qaeda would exist, and certainly none of our present military conflicts be reality...
Further, we could have developed technology to export.

Carter's plan included a number of features--but the essence of it was a focus on encouraging energy efficiency (with some lesser emphasis on alternative energy development).
Some of the provisions (such as part of the program of tax credits for home modifications) were rescinded or allowed to lapse by the Reagan administration. A key effort--efforts to establish a long term policy of promoting higher fuel efficiency in automobiles--was never followed through.
This is one area where you can't put all the blame on the GOP, though. They didn't control Congress untill 1994. Also we--the American people--have spent the last 25 years ignoring the warning signs and our growing dependancy on foreign oil.
Carter's program was "visionary" ina sense. But it was realistic in that it aimed at attaining energy independance over time-without govern mandates that would impair long-term economic growth. Had it been followed, by now our reliance on foreign oil would have been minimal.

simple answer to what went wrong,Reagan,he ended/changed policy. the energy crisis started in 1973 as did other problems in the 70s and were passed along. I believe people were just tired and angry about it all. Ford and Carter shared some of the same ideas on energy. those in control of energy(fossil fuels) were too strong and fought it with a strong lobby, convincing people it was too expensive and wouldn't work. Now it seems they are actually being considered.

Jimmy Carter had the impetus of the '74 gas lines to bring energy to the for. His own party was busy hamstringing oil production in this country, Limiting offshore drilling, slowing down development of refining capacity, the weakkneed response to the Iran hostage situation, all contributed to his being ignored on any good ideas he mig;ht have had. His policies were better than Clinton's, who surrendered use of so much of our Intermountain Basin Coal reserves to the Chinese for illegal campaign contributions. (We doin't need Hilary compounding those mistakes.)

Carter was a brilliant person, but not a very good politician. He had very intelligent foresight and direction for the country, but he didn't know how to translate that to the presidency. Because of this, many people wrote off what he was saying. It is too bad, because he really was a smart guy and knew what he was talking about.

What energy policy?
I remember him sitting in front of a fireplace wearing a sweater, burning wood that came from cut trees and produce lots of carbon dioxide and saying we should all do the same.
He did nothing to promote ANY solutions to ANY real problems the entire LONG four years he was in the White House!
Now, TODAY, he has gone beyond being a failure and has crossed the line into TREASON.
He's criminal and should loose his taxpayer funded pension.

Jimmy said a lot but did very little. If he did pass any energy policy he did not fund it.
