comcast told me:"Our technicians come to your home
to install your network and we will help you support it. This is a huge advantage over a network you install your self as we would be unable to offer any assistance once it was set it up."
HOW do i install my own "network"? I assume this would save me some $$. Am clueless about all of this stuff! thanks

WiFi is normally a short range service. It is available in some book stores, coffee shops, airports, etc. It is fairly expensive but you can pay for it monthly and then have unlimited access to it at any location that supports it.

To use it in your home there are 2 options. If there is a strong signal in your area you can proceed as above. The other option is to install a broadband system in your home using DSL, cable, satellite, etc and use a router to retransmit the signal to your laptop. You can also connect the laptop directly to the service and not use the WiFi.

If you are clueless you need to learn and then do.

If you have only 1 pc, why go wireless or have a network at all? Just use a cable and plug into the modem from the ISP. Set your LAN connecton to obtain IP and DNS automatically and you are in business.

If you have more than 1 user, you need a router; you plug the router WAN port into the modem's feed. You plug wired LAN connections in the router LAN ports. You configure the router WAN for dynamic IP; you configure the router LAN to provide DHCP to the LAN users; you then activate wireless including all security (or hackers will be devouring your service in no time). All this configuration for the router MUST be done using a wired connection to the router. After all is properly done, you then test and troubleshoot.

If you are technically inclined, willing to test things out, and then analyze what is going on you probably can do this. If you are not technically inclined, don't want to understand what makes things work from a technical viewpoint, hire someone.

You can go with dial up service, dial up DSL which is quicker or Cable, which is the fastest. Dial up s the cheapest but also the slowest and you will not be able to use wireless. DSL comes with a wireless moden. Cable comes with a modem and you will need a wireless router

Run to the store and pick up a wireless router. Follow the instructions and you should be up and running about 15 min after you open the box. Cost between $30 and $80.

For wireless internet there are two options that i know of. It all depends on the type of modem you plan to use. DSL & Cable modems connect you two the internet wirelessly. In my opinion you should contact an internet provider and ask them about high speed internet options they provide.
