Yes. Think about it this way. Below I've put a link to the Forbes list of the wealthiest people in the world. They say that there are 946 Billionaires with net worth of 3.5 trillion combined.
Now, how will we define the bottom two billion? Lets be nice and say those are people that don't have $1,500. Think about the masses of poor people in China, India, Africa, and Latin America. If you've traveled to any of those places you know that most people in those places do not have $1,500 to their names, and there are billions of people between China and India alone. There are plenty of people in the USA that don't have $1,500. So, if we can agree that there are 2 billion people in the world that don't have $1,500 we can divide 3.5 tillion by 1,500. That gives us 2.3 billion. In other worlds all the 946 billionaires have enough money to give 2.3 billion people $1,500 each.
$1,500 is still a lot of money for a lot of people in this world, and we only used the top 946. Not a full thousand. So the numbers are truly worse than your questions asks.

I bet it`s even more shocking than that. Over recent years there seems a class of super-rich has emerged who`s fortunes verge on the obscene. I`m not an ecomomist but it seems governments encourage this with greater tax breaks for this new class. I`ve know idea what Private Equity firms are but they seem to be buying everything company that comes up for sale, stripping it down and making a fortune. This stripping down usually involves people loosing jobs.

yes. This is basically true (the bottom 2 billion being africa and such, and the top thousand being in america, the UK, Russia, and France mainly). Unfortunately this is a national and global problem, where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
