I've noticed that some people on here totally flip out and get on your case about something when it really isn't necessary. Why make a mountain out of a molehill? Just take a deep breath and calm down for a change.

There's a bunch of reasons for that. Aside from basic "trolling" which is a behavioral social problem, I think there's a lot going on...

First, a lot of people post questions on here that try to simplify a complex issue, and usually they are making a statement rather than asking a question. Take for example:

"Why are we in Iraq? How did we get into this?"
OR
"Why don't we get out of Iraq, we don't belong there?"

I know which one will promote better answers, and the other one is only going to generate defensive responses from people who disagree with the underlying tone. Post non-biased questions to avoid this problem. Sometimes even if you do that, people will come in with their opinions about the issue. That's trolling, and you could report it or ignore it, your choice. Sometimes people are giving what they think are good answers but their tone is wrong... I do that myself quite often.

The other issue is that people post questions and it's clear they want a certain answer, and THEY get upset when they get the real answers instead of what they wanted to hear. If I can tell that someone is wanting a particular answer, or they've come on here to try to get support for their opinion... sometimes I'll disagree just for fun. Seriously, if you know the answer already, the only purpose I can see for asking it, is so you can show your mom a bunch of people on the web agree with you. If you're doing that, you can be sure that someone is going to give you a reasonable answer and spoil your little scam.

Also, there is a spectrum of questions, from things which can be answered on Google in 5 minutes, and questions which are too complex to answer without making a mountain out of it. Take my example question - what if I answered it and said "because we are" - clearly that is not a good reason to be in Iraq, and is oversimplifying the issue, but if I were to give a good answer, it would be many pages long. Many of the questions in the world are like this - there's no good way to answer them in a short space. And then there's the questions which shouldn't have been posted in the first place - those annoy me the most, but they don't get 'mountain' answers... they get Google links.

Also, many people's thoughts are very disconnected. If I wanted to take an hour or so on this answer, I could fix that, but if you read what I wrote above, you'll see that it could be edited to be shorter and more informative. On my blogs, this is what I do, and a blog the length of this answer usually takes me 2 or 3 hours - AFTER I write the first draft. So, this answer is longer than it needs to be... does that make sense?

All of these reasons contribute to people leaving long, drawn-out answers which are sometimes emotionally charged. It's not a big deal, but it should send a message about how people feel in general about an issue or a particular attitude.

@ Snowboarder - this is your apology. Sorry about that, but it was a dumb question to ask without your location. Your question only makes sense if someone reads your other questions. It's as if I asked you when my staff meeting is today... questions without enough information to answer will get flamed, and there's a good reason for it. People need to learn to identify the information which is pertinent to their problem and post that information. This is part of the reason why people can't find things on Google, when they are obvious to other people... because they can't identify what their question actually is. Proper definition of problems is a skill that is becoming exceedingly important in the Information Age. So that's another reason for 'mountain' answers.

I think that some of them really need to look at the questions being asked and realize that they are NOT an attack on them at any level! Really take a step back and calm down. just answer the question(s) and move on...alternatively, just idnor the question and move on to the next one!!! make sense??

thank you! someone was just now rude to me because I asked a perfectly fine question that most people knew the answer to, she just was very rude. weird. I only got angry once when someone really WAS insulting, someone asked a question to do with religion and this guy was very insulting.
good message though, P&S is usually all about fun!
