Hav you tried to remove any old programs of temp files? Disk defrag can work if you haven't done it before.

You can modify Linux to run what you want. Ubuntu is a great OS. Make sure that you understand how to use linux before switching away from XP. Big learning curve to use linux well.

Find out what wireless card you have and then go to the manufacturers website to make sure they have a linux driver for it.

Before you wipe your hard drive and install any Linux I suggest you create a bootable CD version and test drive it to see if this is what you want to do. As said before Linux is a whole new experience, but probably worth it for the reliablity and security. If you run games then some of them will not work on Linux. Also as suggested consider increasing the memory to 1 gig.

I suggest taking Knoppix Linux for a test drive first. See below for the download site.

One other thing, your windows is a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit processor so consider going to a 64 bit Linux to get all you can from the processor.

Linux requires less code than Windows which is why it seems faster. It is more secure and does not need to be defragged. You do not need anti-virus software and all the other garbage that Windows requires. All of this helps it run faster, because there is less junk required.

There are wireless issues on Windows as well as Linux.

If you have problems then consult the relevent forum to find a solution to your problem. Most things work most of the time on Linux. Try Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS as they are the most user friendly for people crossing over from Windows for the first time.

I've heard things about Linux wireless too, good things.

Ubuntu is a very good choice for your laptop. Your laptop will run better than with XP, and no viruses or any of that other crap either.
