I'm usually a very liberal democrat on this site (you can see my Q's & A's) But I've been becoming more conservative every day lately, and I have to be honest, I cannot see myself voting for Obama and Hillary because I'm kind of scared of having a democrat in charge of the country. I also have a problem with my tax dollars going to welfare programs that I've seen first hand not work very well. The issue of abortion also bothers me as I've been becoming religious, life's painful and meaningless as an atheist. I've been considering changing parties and joining the republican party. Should I do so right now?

I'm really confused by these responses, I am going to eventually switch parties, not right away though but I can assure you guys I'm not a "poser" I still have some liberal left in me and get slightly annoyed when conservatives are cocky, but does anything good really come out of liberal policies in the end? Based on what I've seen, I don't think so.

And if you wanna complain about how being conservative makes me racist, look at this: http://abortionismurder.org/HTML/I-F-1-minority.html
Abortion kills more african americans in a few days then lynchings did in the 1800's/early 1900's.

You're becoming a Conservative? You must have gotten a job and have taken a gander at your first pay check.

I truly don't believe "growing up" has a thing to do with "conservative" or "liberal". I think it has to do with what's comfortable in your mind and psyche.
I've never thought of myself in restrictive terms - I vote for the man I feel will do the best job in that office, be he Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, or conservative, liberal, "middle-roader" or radical.
I'm not scared of anyone in any office - we do have the checks and balances of a democratic republic and we never HAVE to reelect them.
I'm having a problem with our tax dollars going to the maintenance of a Military-Industrial Complex that has made conventional war obsolete for the next half-century but cannot whip one bearded radical hiding in the Kashmir.
Abortion also bothers me since I've always been religious and the karma of people murdering their own becomes more weighty with every passing life.
No, don't join any party right now - let the changes flow and coalesce into a firm choice to do what you feel is right.

It's not uncommon for people who start out as liberal democrats to convert to a more conservative position as they get older. In college I considered myself a democrat, but after a short time in the "real" world, my positions have shifted to that of a staunch conservative. It's also not uncommon for religion to play a factor, as one of the primary teachings of most faiths is absolute right and wrong. That tends to conflict with the concept of relative right and wrong, touted by the far left. I believe that is why so many liberal groups try to undermine or stifle religious expression.
I do think that the most important thing though is to look at the issues that are most core to your belief system, and support the party, and candidate that is most closely in line with your views. As a conservative, and activist in the GOP, I have found situations where a candidate has held positions that I did not agree with, to the point that I wouldn't support or vote for them. It's important to not get so wrapped up in a partisan mentality that you lose objectivity. Keep an open mind, get as much objective info on candidates as you can and make your own decision from there.

I don't know anything about you, but let me say that many of those classifying you as a poser and bad-mouthing being conservative have little to contribute to your dilemma than name-calling.
Please remember that conservatives believe in the individual. Individuals know what is best for them and they have the determination and means by which to acquire that which they need. While occasionally they may need a hand UP, they do not need a hand OUT. Government provides security and laws by which each individual has the ability to better theirself.
Liberals on the other-hand, believe that individuals are unable to take care of themselves and only government can give them what they need. Liberals believe in hand OUT and everyone should be of equal social and financial status. Democrats believe that they are of a higher political status than anyone else. Just as them.
As for the religious aspect of things, it seems that you are opening your eyes to the immense greatness of this world. No matter what anyone says or how they call it, some thing or body started this existence and we as humans, are far too capable to understand all there is to know about our existence.
All this can happen even without growing up. I am still very very crazy and considered very immature by my parents. However, those that really know me and talk to me have much different opinion. Age is only a state of mind and I don't mind.

Good for you, friend. Thinking and questioning is important to making informed decisions.
I held my dem voter card for years after I'd stopped believing in what they offered.
I had this idea of a utopia on earth, created by man . . . that it was something of fantasy was the hardest truth I had to learn.
I also had some issues with depression, I carried tremendous guilt, just for being here and "using" up the earth. When it occurred to me that human life is as connected to the world as all other life -- where all other animals use what they need to live -- it was a freeing feeling!
You shouldn't vote for Hillary or Obama, no one should. They offer an agenda that will attempt to reshape our nation into a mirror of others; others that are already beginning to see the errors they have made. Citizens have suffered under socialism and will continue until capitalism is restored.
Good luck, God speed.

Once upon a time there was this liberal Democrat , who was taught that all his life.he did not have a business of his own but always worked for the "man". then one day he got tired of working for the "man" and started his own business, and low and behold all the things he had always held near and dear opened up before him and he discovered what it takes to be successful by being responsible for his own destiny. Surprise surprise he had become Conservative by the simple act of thanking responsibility for his own destiny. What you should do is take a long look at both parties because they are both kind screwed up right now. Independent thinkers can be Conservative and still have some liberal views, you know pick and choose Ala cart style like its supposed to be... good luck on your journey to self realization it happens to those of us who think for our selves.....

I want to say what a pleasure it is to see new birth . Most of us were Liberals in our younger years . Look at me . You probably already know what a staunch conservative I am , but it wasn't always that way !!
I was a Democrat until Jimmy Carter . Now I'm sure it wasn't just him that made me change , because I was already deeply involved in politics for years and probably had hit the point where you are right now . I like some liberal ideas . But I began to 'see' that those ideas , although good , are not practical or sometimes even rational . It's nice to want to help others through social programs . And it usually 'sounds' great !! But eventually one comes to the conclusion that it just doesn't work . Especially after witnessing it for many years .
You go ahead and make-up your own mind , but remember that Conservatism isn't 100% right either . It'll likely boil down to life and reality for you .
And you're right about being concerned if a Democrat were to win the presidency , especially right now . Maybe at a later date , but right now it would be catastrophic .

Yo man!
I was liberal myself once. Especially in high school and college. WOW! was I liberal!
I was around 28 or so when I switched. It was slow going but eventually it happened.
All you can really do is go with your heart and mind.
One suggestion is to think about becoming an Independent. That way you can be conservative is some areas and liberal in others and neutral in others.
I'll leave you with one thought then I'll shut up.
Liberal open mindedness is really set towards indifference based on one's own self justification.

I don't know if I would call it growing up but I definitely would say that your heart is softening to the preciousness of EVERY life.
If that is where your heart lies then follow it. But remember there are moderates in the Republican party also however for the most part they are pro Life.
I'm extremely conservative and have mostly aligned myself with the Republicans for about 16 yrs because they are closest to my values.
God bless you and continue to grow in grace.

We are all born liberal, some of us just grow up faster than others. Welcome to being an adult.
As far as changing parties, Independent is probably a better choice than Republican. I'm a Republican, but am thinking of changing to independent. Ever since Reagan left office, the Republicans have been going farther and farther left.
Libertarian or Constitution party really reflect my views, but they are too small to have any chance of winning, so I usually vote Republican because it is the lesser of two evils.

Vote how you feel. I still haven't made up my mind for 2008, but I will probably vote Democrat.
Ps. Liberal and conservative do not mean Democrat and Republican. There are many conservative dems and many liberal repubs.
