I downloaded this program at the suggestion of my school's tech help desk, and it says my temperature is 76*c and 92*c. I don't know why there are two values, but that's WAY too hot, isn't it? All I was doing was looking at youtube videos.
I have a lot of space left on my laptop because I bought an external hard drive.
The program is called "mobile meter."

It's definitely in Celsius -- it says "C" after each number.

Holy CRAP, yeah that's waaaay too hot!!
Maybe try taking a can of compressed air and with the power off carefully use it to blow any dust or other crap out of the vents on the laptop.
If that doesn't help, I'd guess that one of the cooling fans inside the laptop may be seized up and not spinning. If that's the case you should take it to a pro and have them diagnose / repair it for you (or, if it's still under warranty, arrange to get repairs from the manufacturer).

Yes it is to hot. Does your computer freeze up, shut down because most of the new systems shut down before it over heats or does any weird message come up on your computer like Protection failure, or something like that. Also check to see if your fan is working properly you usually should here the fan running when the computer is turned on but some computers have a quiet fan. If you don't know where the fan is it is most probably on the back of the computer. When you find it just put your hand just slightly over the fan and if you feel a little air coming out then it is working if there is not then it is most probably dirty. To clean it got to your nearest Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Depot, or Office Max (Office Depot or Office Max is your best bet) and get a can of computer cleaner it is like a arousal can it removes dust. It is basically a can of pressurized air that's all it is. Some might have a lubricant in them, but that's it. After you have done that if you still are having problems then you are going to take some where to get it fixed. Hope this helps.

Normally you have to have special sensors inside your computer connected to your motherboard in order to read your CPU temperature.
If however, this mobile meter is actually working, then the two temps denote the temp inside the case and the temp of the processor.
As for the high temperatures, perhaps it is actually in F and you just seem to think your reading C.
Laptops will run hotter/warmer than a PC, but that is just because everything is shoved really close together in a small area (The area under the keyboard).

Maybe a better question to ask is "what is your computer doing"
Temps inside Laptops can get very high if there isn't enough ventilation around the unit or if it has been running a long time.
Some processors can have normal operating temps as high as 140 degrees F and 80 Degrees Cel.
It really depends. What kind of computer is it? What kind of processor? All these things can be factors in the operating temp of the system.
I would suggest, if you are still in warranty, sending the unit to the original manufacturer of the computer, and have them evaluate it. The IT dept of a university is rarely equiped to deal with portable computer systems.

Visit this site for a list of maximum temperatures based on your processor.
http://www.technibble.com/what-is-my-computers-maximum-cpu-temperature/
Reboot your computer and enter the command to go into your BIOS at startup. There should be a setting in there that tells you the CPU current temperature. It is VERY important to open your PC and use a can of compressed air to blow all the dust out of the inside and maintain proper ventilation. There are also many types of case fans and additional cooling options you can buy very cheap.

one would be the case temp and the other is the cpu temp they do indeed seem to be a bit too hot. have the laptop serviced, and have them clean out the accumulated dust from the exhaust fan. Also, make sure air can circulate across the bottom of the computer.

It sounds warm - if you are using the lappy on your lap, or on the arm of the chair, it WILL get too hot! They are really designed to be used on a desk.
Turn it upside down, see where the fan vents are and make sure you don't cover them!

Too high! Hopefully due to inaccurate software.
This one is more accurate and popular among the geeks:

If you still get high readings, the cpu cooling fan might not be working properly or the vents/heatsinks are partly blocked.
