So why don't we call the republican liberals after all they wanted to change things in Iraq, Afganistan, Iran and soforth....

It actually depends how you define liberal.

Classical Liberalism is an idea of nearly unlimited personal and financial liberty. Neither party can stomach the idealistic version of liberalism.

Today, liberal is sort of a code-word for hybrid socialism. Both parties are fairly liberal in that sense, but it has little to do with the historical philosophy with the same name.

A liberal can belong to either party. It is simply an adjective.
