I'm no Bruins fan, but in my opinion, Marc Savard is underappreciated in NHL circles. I never really heard much from him in the media this year, yet he had close to 100 points (with most of them coming from assists). I'm a Penguins fan - I watched the games between the Pens and Bruins this past year and he created spectacular plays for his teammates. Is the fact that he was on a lackluster Bruins team one of the reasons he was under the radar this year? What do you think?

Yes I agree that Savard is a bit under appreciated. It is because of the teams lack in success. He should get the attention that he deserves. He has a lot of skill and like you said, was close to a 100 points season. With him on the ice he definitely makes his teammates around him look better. But ya with the Bruins and their horrible season people tend to over look the team and of course him. I mean look at the pens and their season...they improved their game compared to last season and they get a lot of attention...saying they have a really young team and have a lot of talent. I think each player gets the attention they deserve and if they Bruins start picking up their game soon Savard will get more attention and be more appreciated.

I think that a lot of him being under the radar as a Bruins started when he was signed on the same day as Zdeno Chara (who was supposed to be the best on the market). When I heard we picked up a playmaker in Savard I had visions of Glen Murray getting back to his old ways like when Thornton used to feed him the biscuit. Savard is a very under-rated player already but I think a lot of this had to do with the way the team as a whole performed. Being a Bruins fan I definitely apprecaited him more than most NHL fans. He was the main reason I even watched my B's and the only hope we have for next year, unless Chara and others decide to man up and play up to their capability (maybe even play good enough to earn their salaries-- Chara and Bergeron).

There is a reason why Kessel left Boston... because he didnt like it and he didnt like Savard. Everyone is Boston always said the reason why Kessel is so good is because of Savard... He wanted to prove himself and left. So he wouldnt want Savard back. ...Dont know where you are getting that from.. How does GETTING another play make some expendable.... no it doesnt.... The reason why Boston got Horton was FOR SAVARD. Savard needs a right handed HIGH scoring WINGER. Bruins extended Savards contract by SEVEN years. Peter Charielli already released a statement like 2 days ago saying SAVARD ISNT GOING ANYWHERE.

Some of it is being under the radar in Boston. Some of it is the lack of team success ANY of the teams he has played for have had. It is hard to get noticed if you never make it to the playoffs.

Some of it, however, is his reputation. He has had problems in the past with his attitude, work ethic, and commitment to team defense. It would appear from his last couple of seasons that he has turned it around, but I think there will be some cynicism until he proves he will continue to do it season in and season out. Making the playoffs and performing well then would make a big difference.

In any case, he does appear to be underrated.

Underappreciated? Not in the least

Underrated? Definitely.

As for a previous responder, Denis Savard has a younger sister, but no brothers.

savard has great hockey smarts, he played well under the radar and if you can handle his poor plus/minus is a great pickup for your fantasy team come fall. the bruins should do better with claude julien , tim thomas has an opportunity to shine this year unless they can pick up toskala or bryzgalov

He always has been under the radar, but when you play with Bergeron you gotta be doing something. Very under rated

Two part answer really. Yes, he is under appreciated offensively but when you factor in his defensive ability then no. He is a liabilty away from the puck and even strength.
Someone else who comes to mind in the same retrospect is Sheldon Souray, 25+ goals yes, but a pylon on D.
