I am interested in becoming an accountant for the FBI. I've been researching and each time it connects accountants as special agents. I'm not cut out for criminal investigating and all the secret private agent stuff. What does this mean? If you are an accountant for the FBI are you automatically a special agent?

Accountants are part of the Finance Division and are classified as Professional Staff instead of Special Agents.

The FBI promotes from within and they do not (or rarely) hire people outright to be special agents. You have to work your way up to a special agent level from a lower level position. Most entry level jobs in the FBI are clerks and it looks like you are skipping this level and going right in as an accountant.

I had a few friends in the FBI who worked their way up from clerks and while they liked the job there were a lot of negatives like having a desk that is locked all the time, getting your work out of a safe in the morning then putting it back in a safe at night (or when they went to the bathroom).

The FBI has always been in need of great accountants and people who can sniff out financial crimes. It is interesting and challenging work but not a special agent type job. You may ascend to this job if you like in the future but, you probably will never get to the point where you're running around with a gun in Prague ducking from other spies and criminals.

Good luck!

I think that the term "Special Agent" is used for all FBI Agents.

Hope This Helps!
