I lived in Japan for 6 years,I've been everywhere from Okinawa to Hokkaido and I've been treated very well by Japanese people. The night life is incredible and there are alot things to go and see during the day time.Depending on where you go you'll be treated different for example in some country parts they don't get to see foreigners that much so they will probably stare at you a little but like somewhere like
Okinawa they are used to foreigners and won't pay you any mind. Its a cool place,my wife is Japanese and I enjoy going to Japan when I visit my in laws.

In my one trip to Japan, I've developed mixed opinions. Regrading Japanese sentiments on African-Americans, I would say that it varies and your experience will depend on the circumstances of your encounters. It certainly seemed to me that some Japanese people were accepting of African- Americans as well as other Americans. I would be able to give a better answer if I were black, but as a white American I still was an foreigner to them so that is the experience I can relate. Generally, Japan seemed to have a mix of conservative nationalist people and others who were more liberal and tolerant. Everyone seemed to be fairly polite but I did meet one person who basically wanted to interrogate/lecture me about America and the Western world. Japan seemed to have some elements of racism, xenophobia, and nationalism. People were mostly polite and engaging but there remained evidence of a closed-culture that valued its traditionalism. Underlying this may be a healthy desire to preserve their own culture. Not everyone was like this though. I am sure there a number of people who are interested in foreign culture and meeting people such African- Americans. I certainly would not dissuade you from traveling to Japan, you might have a great time. I have heard some black people say they felt welcomed there. I would warn you, however not to be naive and expect to find no racism. Some people are racist just as they are everywhere around the world. Good luck.

I really don't think they care much for us, but I've never been mistreated by any Japanese people that I can recall. I, personally am somewhat fascinated with them, though. I really think its mostly about respect. I think that if they can see that the black person (or anyone) carries themself in a respectable manner and at least attempts to learn their ettiquitte and customs when they're around them, that there's a little more respect there. I think they appreciate any effort that foreigners (to them) put forth to adapt to their lifestyle. I love their humility and wiseness. I think the younger generation of Japanese might like blacks more from an entertainment viewpoint and may be interested in the music, artists, etc. Can't really say that I have any expert knowledge on the matter. (Should I not have answered?)

My friend who is Chinese, told me to never to to china or japan because they are very racist....but they are polite.
Japanese are racist against chinese as well. They only like their own and koreans ( I think ). If there is a small group of asian from different parts they probaly will get along and form a click but if there are more of their own to talk to it is a different story.

With suspicion. Asians and so many other cultures around the world don't like blacks and this is the truth. However you won't receive a lot of flak for it or risk being disowned as you would if you were in an intimate relationship with a black man/woman.

Mostly alright, but remember a large number of black American GI's have been convicted of raping young Japanese girls, so there is discussion in the news.
