from The Singles 1969-1973 written by Digby Diehl
One of those "Late Late Show" classics, Rhythm On The River, starring Bing Crosby, is a movie about a songwriter who struggles his way to the top and then is deserted by his songwriting talent. In the plot, the composer's most famous song was entitled Goodbye To Love. There was no real Goodbye To Love in that movie, but Richard liked the title and it became the first single by the Richard Carpenter / John Bettis songwriting team.
Musically, Goodbye To Love is an innovation in the Carpenters style, with poignantly downbeat lyrics and Tony Peluso's bold but melodic fuzz-guitar solo. But a lot of people from all sides of the musical spectrum pushed this hit into the Top 10, which pleased Karen because this is her favorite single.

One of Karen's and my two favorite Carpenters albums, I'd like to touch on the history of two of the songs:
Goodbye To Love - I wrote this melody while visiting London in late 1971. John wrote the lyric in early 1972. While constructing the arrangement I pictured a melodic fuzz guitar solo and knew the guitarist I wanted to use. In '71 one of our tours featured Mark Lindsay opening the show. His backing group was called Instant Joy and featured a guitarist named Tony Peluso, whose playing caught my ear. I asked Tony to play on Goodbye To Love. the result, in my opinion, is one of the all-time recorded guitar solos. We subsequently asked Tony to join our road group and he was with us for many years. Goodbye To Love went on to become quite a big hit but it did provoke a lot of "hate mail" from people who claimed we'd "sold out" and gone HARD ROCK!!!
