Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Dallas ect ect..
Stay away from the coast. You really cant get anything nice near water ( except the great lakes) in that range. Well maybe with the exception on New Orleans. One person said Tampa, but I really dont think you are going to find anything you would like central or south florida in that price range.

Consider Texas; especially the Odessa & Midland area. I am a realtor in Odessa Texas and our economy is booming. Our home prices have been really low and still are but prices are now rising at a rate of 12 to 18 percent so those buying now enjoy a great rate of return on their new property right from the start. We have a high demand for workers so newcomers find employment easily with extra high wages. I would be happy to email you some listings up to $150,000 & a city newcomers package so you can see what our area has to offer. Also if you are wanting to buy a home to rent; investors enjoy around 98% occupancy rate. donnaedwards.realtor@yahoo.com

My suggestion is the City of Lafayette, LA, its a growing community, arts, music, food, they have been aggressive toward technology and job growth.
Within 30 minutes is St. Landry Parish (Opelousas LA 70570)
Homes in 2007 have ranged from $60,000 plus and a nice home can be purchased in the $135 range +-

Go to REALTOR.com, and you can research the actual homes for sale in any given area. It may take time, but you'll see where the "bang for the buck" is.
....Then hook up with a reputable REALTOR in the area (one that won't cost you a penny....contact me if/when you find an area, and I can put you into contact with one through my network). Or make cold calls to the various agents you come across on the site, and choose one you're comfortable with. They'll help you to save time and money in the home search!
